The Ground Beneath Her Feet
The Ground Beneath Her Feet | Salman Rushdie
25 posts | 28 read | 23 to read
In this remaking of the myth of Orpheus, Rushdie tells the story of Vina Apsara, a pop star, and Ormus Cama, an extraordinary songwriter and musician, who captivate and change the world through their music and their romance. Beginning in Bombay in the fifties, moving to London in the sixties, and New York for the last quarter century, the novel pulsates with a half-century of music and celebrates the power of rock n roll. From the Trade Paperback edition.

For #TitlesandTunes I may not get to this story of “love, death, and rock 'n' roll“ in July (and save it for August's #AuthorAMonth), but I do want to read it soonish. Who doesn't love an Orfeo retelling?

Too many #sexdrugsandrockandroll songs to choose from, but “Rock and Roll Lifestyle“ by Cake has been stuck in my head for several days now. You're welcome?

@Cinfhen, @BarbaraBB

BarbaraBB Great choices! I loved that book! 10mo
Cinfhen I don‘t know this song…but I love The Distance 10mo

I am halfway through the book and the last 30-35 pages were filled with sad moments, and one thing that makes it even more disheartening is the beautiful writing. You could almost feel the pain, sense of loss and loneliness of the characters.

I like that the central characters have such unique names- Ormus Cama, Vina Apsara, Umeed Merchant

BTW Umeed means hope in English

Naj I started this last year and abandoned at around the halfway mark because I got bored and thought the story was going nowhere. Does it get better? The writing is brilliant though. 5y
Shamzi I am halfway through too so can't really say if it gets better, I am really enjoying the writing more than the story, and almost all the characters and not just the central ones have a story arc, which is one of the highlight of this book!!! 5y
Shamzi @Naj plus I switch to a different book which I reading in parallel with this one when I get bored 😀😀😀 5y
Naj Somehow I missed that you were halfway through in your original post, my bad 🙈. Yeah, the story does drag a bit. Hope it gets better, looking forward to your review. 5y

"the best in our nature is drowning in the worst"
It takes a beat to understand it. This book is going to take a long time to finish, but it is really good!!!

"In spite of all the evidence that life is discontinous, a valley of rift, and that random chance plays a great part in our fates, we go on believing in the continuity of things,in causation & meaning,But we live on a broken mirror, and fresh cracks appear in its surface every day"

Have only read Salman Rushdie once a long time ago, so far first 50 pages have been really beautiful & full of insight, loved these lines, will post more as I read more

Whenever someone who knows you disappears, you lose one version of yourself. Yourself as you were seen, as you were judged to be. Lover or enemy, mother or friend, those who know us construct us, and their several knowings slant the different facets of our characters like diamond-cutter's tools. Each such loss is a step leading to the grave, where all versions blend and end.

My first Rushdie, blew my mind -- a whole new way of thinking and speaking, relating, writing and storytelling -- kind of like my first Tom Robbins, but on crack.
