Big Girl
Big Girl: How I Gave Up Dieting and Got a Life | Kelsey Miller
10 posts | 14 read | 25 to read
A hilarious and inspiring memoir about one young woman's journey to find a better path to both physical and mental health. At twenty-nine, Kelsey Miller had done it all: crash diets, healthy diets, and nutritionist-prescribed "eating plans," which are diets that you pay more money for. She'd been fighting her un-thin body since early childhood, and after a lifetime of failure, finally hit bottom. No diet could transform her body or her life. There was no shortcut to skinny salvation. She'd dug herself into this hole, and now it was time to climb out of it. With the help of an Intuitive Eating coach and fitness professionals, she learned how to eat based on her body's instincts and exercise sustainably, without obsessing over calories burned and thighs gapped. But, with each thrilling step toward a healthy future, she had to contend with the painful truths of her past. BIG GIRL chronicles Kelsey's journey into self-loathing and disordered eating-and out of it. This is a memoir for anyone who's dealt with a distorted body image, food issues, or a dysfunctional family. It's for the late-bloomers and the not-yet-bloomed. It's for everyone who's tried and failed and felt like a big, fat loser. So, basically, everyone.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Miller's relationship with food and dieting is one that I definitely relate to, and this book provided some useful insights that I can apply to my own journey. I'm not 100% sold on rhe idea of "insightful eating", but I do think it has some good takeaways.

Great book! I have been struggling with my weight for 12 years. It was fantastic to finally read a book written by someone my size. Even better it was about her journey out of disordered diet eating and into intuitive eating. It‘s a thought-provoking book, but Kelsey does take herself too seriously. Definitely recommend! 4⭐️

Didn‘t love it as much as hot & heavy or things no one tells fat girls. This was more about her past than about her quitting dieting or body issues. I didn‘t care for her narration, often it was like listening to a teenager. It was at times shallow and immature. It didn‘t really get much deeper than the surface of the subject. Still inspiring overall.

I thoroughly enjoyed this #audiobook! The author, Kelsey Miller, does a great job. She sounds exactly like Mindy Kaling (funny actress from The Mindy Project)..who I love. Their sense of humor is very similar too.
I know a lot of us have issues with our bodies and food. You will probably relate to a lot of what she says. She comes across well, taught me a few things, and made me laugh. 4 stars

Christine Loved this (and her writing on Refinery29)! 8y
ItsAnotherJen I was surprised at how much I liked it. I was just going through Overdrive getting any available audio books that sounded okay. It made my house chores much more enjoyable!! 8y

It's hard to explain what this book meant to me. I've never felt so connected to an author. He stories made me laugh, made me cry, and made me think about my own life from a new perspective. It was all just so relatable. Even now, I'm having trouble putting my thoughts into words. This book affected me, in a big way.

#somethingforsept I was not expecting this book to be one that #mademecry. The dieting stuff was fine but it was her anxiety and the sense that she somehow wasn't ready for a "full" life until she was "perfect" that really hit me. This book that was supposed to be a light read was the push that convinced me to ask my doctor for help with my own anxiety. It's been six weeks and I am already feeling a change for the better.

LeahBergen That's great news!! 👍🏼👍🏼 8y
Zelma What a great result for what you thought would be a light, fluffy read. It certainly wasn't that (I remember it being kind of jarring) but such great news for your life. 😀 8y
SusanInTiburon Thanks for sharing about this. It's really important. Love to you. ❤️ 8y

AmyS @SusanInTiburon Thank you. Other people speaking out about their own struggles with anxiety and depression helped me immensely so I feel like I should pay it forward now that I'm doing better. 8y

Have been on such a journey to feel "good enough" and have been going at my own pace -- saw this book at the library and was immediately drawn to it. I'm seeing so much of myself in it!

AmyS I did, too. Not so much the dieting stuff but a lot of the anxiety and self-image stuff reminded me of me. It was difficult to read at times because of that but I'm glad I did. I hope you enjoy it. 8y
teainthelibrary @AmyS starting it tonight! Lately I've been noticing and questioning how guilty I feel just for eating and how I'm embarrassed to be getting a super burrito instead of a regular one or whatever! I'm hoping this book will provide some sorta solace from that kind of negativity. 8y

AmyS I think it will. It certainly made me feel less guilty about getting chocolate croissants and putting butter on my popcorn. 8y
AmyS I look forward to your review. I haven't posted one yet. I probably should... 8y
Zelma I'm looking forward to your review as well. I read it earlier this year and it was quite different than I expected. 8y
