And When She Was Good
And When She Was Good | Laura Lippman
7 posts | 21 read | 12 to read
In the comfortable suburb where she lives, Heloise is just a mom, the youngish widow with a forgettable job who somehow never misses her son's soccer games or school plays. But in discrete hotel rooms throughout the area, she's the woman of your dreams - if you can afford her hourly fee. For more than a decade, Heloise has believed her unorthodox life to be a safe one; rigidly compartmentalized, maintaining no real friendships and trusting very few people. But now this secret life is under siege. Her once oblivious accountant is asking loaded questions about her business. Her longtime protector is hinting at new, mysterious dangers. Her employees can no longer be trusted. Her ex, the one who doesn't know he's the father of her son, is appealing his life sentence. And, one county over, another so-called 'suburban madam' has been found dead in her car, an apparent suicide... Can Heloise stay alive long enough to remake her life again, and save her son? Can she really expect to leave everything else behind?

Pickpick

I‘m a big Laura Lippman fan, and this 2012 novel is a great read. A twisting mystery with high end prostitution at its center. The characters are interesting and complicated. I found the arc of Helen‘s life, as she became Heloise, entirely believable and I rooted for her success. Unfortunately:

“No one is safe in this world. This best we can do is create an illusion of safety for your children as long as possible” (p. 310)

Crazeedi I like Lippman too, I'll have to look for this 4y

Spent the morning visiting the epic used bookstore, Book Barn, for the first time! Only wandered through 2 of the 4 locations; it was enough for one day.

Picked up a couple $1 Karin Slaughters and the two Laura Lippmans pictured here. #bookhaul

MicheleinPhilly So THAT‘S why you showed restraint at The Strand. 😉 6y

Mehso-so

Had a bus ride today, so I finished this book, which is what I had started before the hike. I felt okay about it, it was interesting enough that I felt compelled to keep reading but I don't know that I ended up loving it. It was entertaining, so full marks for that. (The picture is of Glacier Grey, the third biggest in the world! We saw that the last day of the W trek)

Library book sales today in both my little town and the next town south of me. Because, you know, #youcanneverhavetoomanybooks ! And the BBE offered to take me to both (and he's a non-reader). $11 total - not too shabby!

Suzze Laura Lippman! Great writer. 💜 7y
Tanner @Suzze Isn't she though? I read a book of her short stories and it gave me the heebee-jeebies. 7y

Sometimes Twitter can be so cool!!! Had a "conversation" yesterday with Laura Lippman about this book. I find it interesting that she considers it "VERY divisive" as it's one of very few titles that my coworkers and I actually agree on. Did you read it? What did YOU think?
