The Darling Dahlias and the Poinsettia Puzzle
The Darling Dahlias and the Poinsettia Puzzle | Susan Wittig Albert
6 posts | 2 read | 2 to read
Its Christmas, 1934, and the citizens of Darling, Alabama, are unwrapping a big package of Christmas puzzles. Mildred Kilgore and Earlynne Biddle are planning to open a bakery on the squareif they can come up with the right recipes. Charlie Dickens faces two of the biggest puzzles of his career as an investigative reporter, and one of them involves his wife. Cute little Cupcakes talent as a singer and dancer makes her a tempting target for an unscrupulous exploiter; Lizzy must enlist the Dahlias to protect her, while she herself is confronted by a romantic puzzle. And Sheriff Norris is forced to reopen a puzzling mystery that the town thought was solved and follow a string of clues that lead to a deadly situation at the nearby prison farm. Once again, NYT best-selling author Susan Wittig Albert takes us to a place where real people have courage, respect their neighbors, and dream of doing their best, even when theyre not sure what that is. She reminds us that Christmas is a celebration of friendship, community, and whats right with the world. Theres nothing puzzling about that. ?BonusLiz Lacys Garden Gate column on poinsettias, plus the Dahlias collection of traditional sweet Southern goodies for the holiday table, garnished with some cookery history. I have a soft spot for small town Southern stories and this story scratched that itch in such a lovey holiday way. There were a number of storylines going on, which made it somewhat hard to keep track, but I just went along with it and enjoyed the ride the audiobook took me on. It‘s also in the middle of a series and I‘m excited to go back and read from the beginning. A very good listen! 🌟🌟🌟🌟 #wintergames #SantasBookshELVES

Setting is 1934. Include attitudes of time. Snogging your boss isn't considered bad. Implied Lesbian couple are raising a child together. No one bats an eye, even when child's unscrupulous biological father attempts to take her away. Doubtful in '34. Not sure to applaud author making it the non issue it should be. Sneaking in positive message. Would have been a much more powerful story to include fight for equality & love is love.

Crinoline_Laphroaig ^It is a Cozy read. Probably to much to ask of the genre. 6y

In case you were wondering. Colder in Ok than in Shetland. Perfect day to hang out by the fire w/ Darling Dahlias Garden Club. Love how author includes Liz's Garden Column and recipes. Not quite a standalone. I've read 1- 4 of this series so I knew characters but I was missing bits of the story. I need to catch up. Couple things I'm not sure about in this book will do a review later today. 🌬 #tobecontinued #holidayreads #12daysofbookmas

Wow! The things you learn about life in 1934 while reading:
"The flapper era was over, thank God, and women were allowed to have breasts again. She had even read that one company was proposing to make bras in different cups sizes---so they would fit better.....a doctor had patented a tampon with a cardboard applicator, but how long before you could buy one was anybody's guess." ?
