This book is a good tool for introducing students to the realities of war and the toll it takes on families. This can be connected to other examples of wars creating refugees and students can discuss what the world can do to help. This would be good for older grades (4,5,6,7)

This book uses bold, curvy lines, and mostly monochromatic colors on each page to create a sense of movement and excitement for the reader. The pages early on fill with black as a representation of the toll the war took on the characters, black signifies danger. As the characters get further away from their country and the war, the pages fill with light colors.

This story actually made me cry! I think that this is an important story to tell though, so I think that I would want to have it in my classroom. I worry that this story could become too political but I would just have to stand my ground and give them unbiased facts. I'm a pretty liberal person and this story just hit me in the heart. It makes me so sad that this story is so many people's reality.

This picture book tells the heart wrenching tale of a family who loses a family member and decides to sneak across the border into America. The have to cross the border and hide from border patrol. This story broke my heart because it's a reality for too many people. I think this would be a good book to have in your classroom but heavy discussions would come with this book.

This book was amazing!!! But part of me thinks it may be too complex for young children to understand, but you never know!

The Journey by Francesca Sanna. This picture book was written in 2016. This book was amazing. It is about a family that is leaving their home country after a war and all the trials they face on their journey. I think it is very relevant to today‘s events and our countries border crisis. The illustrations were also beautiful and flowed well with the story it gave a calming visual to a somewhat scary story line.

This book has some of the most beautiful illustrations(pub.2016). This book tells the story of a family who is trying to leave their country due the breakout of the war. My favorite quote throughout this book is “She shows us pictures of strange cities, strange forests, and strange animals until she finally sighs,...“ I like this quote because it shows that people from all different cultures and places are just looking for a little bit of help.

Illustrations- An image shows the depiction of a guard in the eyes of a child. He is much larger and scarier than any other images.

This book would be great for a history lesson about the journey's families need to take to escape from war.

This book was a wonderful read. It is a sad story about a family escaping a war and moving to a new land. It is told in the eyes of a child. The illustrations were also depicted in the eyes of a child and what he was seeing.

This is a beautifully illustrated book that follows a family's journey away from their home where war rages. I like that it presents the journey as sad, hopeful, and uncertain all at once.

If you need to explain to children (or simple minded adults) why the Muslim ban is wrong have them read this book. Although this book would have to add another level of horror of visa approval and airport detainment for it to be accurate. #nomuslimban

This gorgeously illustrated book shows how a child's life is disrupted by war. It begins with a peaceful day at the beach, then war, the father is murdered, and they must flee. The book provides a perfect introduction to what it's like to be a refugee.

To begin the new year I'm focusing on immigration stories- picture books, youth chapter books, and adult fiction and nonfiction.

This is a short and simple story of a family torn apart by war and seeking a safe place to live. Set in no particular country, this makes a good introduction to the experience of so many families who have left everything in search of safety.
Endorsed by Amnesty Int'l, this book also features resources for teaching.

Foxyfictionista The art looks beautiful. 7y

This is a very powerful picture book. One very needed in today's society. We follow a family from their war torn country, seeking a new life as a refugee. The concepts are broad to make the topic understandable, but it is done in such a beautiful way. When you have to explain the news to your kids, books like this are important steps to helping them understand. What makes this book that much better are the whimsical illustrations.

Here's a favorite page from the book (some is cut off because of the square image.) Read the text and then look at the string mother who is never scared, crying while she's holding her children. So much discussion could come from this page alone. #picturebooks #kidlit #kidlitsy

Sad that there is no image available, but here's the cover. A simply BEAUTIFUL book about being a refuge. It doesn't state where the characters are coming from or where they are going, but it hits all the emotions. We see them hide in trucks, get pushed back by border guards. It's an important topic handled delicately so kids can relate but also is harsh enough to reflect the reality. Important book for empathy!!! #kidlit #picturebooks #kidlitsy

I so want to get my hands on this book. I volunteer with a group of refugees. This picturebook is about a family's journey to a safe country. I think it might be relatable for the children.

JDHawkins The page that shows how strong the children feel their mother is juxtaposed with the page showing her real terror and sadness absolutely destroyed me. I wanted to show it to every person who has ever complained about refugees. 7y
charl08 @JDHawkins I googled some images to find this one. That page is heartbreaking. 7y

I read this book last week and can I just say that it is one of the most amazing children's books I've ever read? I don't read many, but this story about a refugee family is so heart wrenching given the crisis in Syria and the faces of children who've been devastated and lost their homes and loved ones. Booksellers, if there's one universal children's book you should be selling this Christmas, it's this one! Stunning and relevant ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

javadiva Thanks for the recommendation! Syria breaks my heart. I love children's books with a deep message. 8y
