Willful Disregard
Willful Disregard: A Novel About Love | Lena Andersson
13 posts | 13 read | 17 to read
Winner of Sweden's most prestigious literary award, a novel about an otherwise sensible woman's descent into the obsession and delusion of unrequited love. Ester Nilsson is a sensible person in a sensible relationship. She knows what she thinks and she acts according to her principles. Until the day she is asked to give a lecture on renowned artist Hugo Rask. The man himself sits in the audience, spellbound, and when the two meet afterwards, he has the same effect on her. From then on Ester's existence is intrinsically linked to that day, and the events that follow change her life forever. Bitingly funny and darkly fascinating, WILLFUL DISREGARD is a story about total and desperate devotion and about how willingly we betray ourselves in the pursuit of love.

Oooh this was a cringey read, it explained so well why we keep going back, holding out hope for that unrequited love. I want to make one of my best friends read it, to show her how ridiculous she is being - but 'the girlfriend chorus' are easy to ignore, as I have done myself in the past! Reminded me of Almost Love. Really good.

#LilithJuly #LoveFool
This is a novel about the nature of obsession and unrequited love.
After Ester and Hugh meet, we quickly see Ester lose herself to an obsessive love, as she spirals into self-deception, and her ‘hope becomes a parasite‘. It‘s unsettling to see her self-respect unravelling at her own hands. I kept wanting to yell “He‘s just not that into you!” at her, willing her to regain her grounding in reality and escape her own undoing.

Cinfhen Sounds like a #LoveFool to me 😉 5y

This book will make you cringe -but that's part of its appeal. It's very accurate in describing the level of stupidity humans are capable of when in love/infatuated/obsessed.

Some #twowordtitles for #WomeninTranslation month. Shamefully I've only read one of these, Dark Spring by the German writer Unica Zürn, which was haunting and bleak, a brutal fable of childhood trauma that was likely autobiographical. #witmonth #AndItsAugust @RealLifeReading

Abailliekaras Great theme! You've got me thinking ... 🤓 7y
batsy @Abailliekaras Thanks, it was the result of staring at my shelves and going, "I haven't read this one... Nope, haven't read this one either... Ooh one more that I haven't read" ? 7y

batsy @tricours I looked it up on GR and saw your review! Interesting criticism, especially the language aspect (considering I'll be reading the Eng translation). 7y
merelybookish It's still an impressive collection, even if you haven't read them all. 🙂 7y

This book is shockingly honest in the pain and suffering you feel when you love more. Ester falls for Hugo who will probably never love anyone except himself. Bitingly honest and completely refreshing, each sentence in this book echoed thoughts I once felt for my first love. So so good.

Note: occasionally I will review front/backlist titles that my company publishes. Thoughts are my own.

The three exclamation marks indicated either a poor sense of style or an overwhelming urge to be heard.

Hugo never followed up anything Ester said. Ester always followed up what Hugo said. Neither of them was really interested in her but they were both interested in him.
