Pickpick

Originally published in chapters in a monthly literary journal in 1978-79, this quiet Japanese novel follows a year in the life of a sleep-deprived mother and her child after her husband leaves her. She is not always a good mother, but she does her best. I could relate to her failings, like when she left it to the very last minute to invite guests to her daughter‘s 3rd birthday. The subtle power of this story crept up on me. #womenintranslation

Things are getting tense in The Rose Code!

Ten Women will go into hibernation now that #womenintranslation month is over. I might do the same with the Allende because of WWII overload with Rose Code.

Meanwhile, the Fellowship has made it to Lorien. I love finding new details with each reread. In the last chapter it was the magic, feet-soothing water of the River Nimrodel. Wouldn‘t that be nice to have IRL?

Cinfhen Confession: I‘ve never read any of LOTR books!!!🙈 or seen ANY of the films!!! 7mo
Susanita *gasps* It‘s never too late to start! 😃🧙‍♂️ 7mo
Susanita @Cinfhen Don‘t watch the Hobbit movies. They‘re visually gorgeous but could have told the story with just one. 7mo
Q84 @Cinfhen Me either! 7mo
Cinfhen Good to know @Susanita and glad to hear I‘m not the ONLY one on Litsy @Q84 who hasn‘t read the series😜 7mo

It‘s good that I picked The Rose Code as my next mystery, even though the book club meeting isn‘t for a few weeks, because it‘s 646 pages!

Ten Women is for #womenintranslation month and #ReadingTheAmericas but it‘s a bit depressing so far.

Children of God is very interesting so far.

Frodo and company are about to leave The Shire.

Cinfhen Wowza!! You‘ve got a chunkster!!! 8mo
Susanita @Cinfhen IKR! Clearly I didn‘t do my research when I voted for it in the poll. Luckily, it‘s mostly fast paced. 8mo

I sometimes get confused keeping track of readathon goals, but I‘m trying again with #RushAthon this month. These are the books I want to read, in no particular order (except for one that‘s a sequel).

-Ten Women
-The Hobbit
-Romantic Comedy
-The Sparrow ➡️ Children of God
-The Memory of Animals
-The Rat Began to Gnaw the Rope
…and maybe more?

i would have liked to have gotten to know the characters a little more intimately, but overall i enjoyed the gorgeous prose and the examination of loss. this is my first han kang novel, so i‘m looking forward to reading more of her works.
