6 posts | 3 read
Ty Lewis can't believe it when Coach V recruits him for the football team. This is Ty's big chance to prove how fast he is on the field, get a fresh start in a new school, and be like his older brother, Thane "Tiger" Lewis, who's about to graduate from collegeand is being courted by the NFL. But Ty's guardian, Uncle Gus, won't let him play. Uncle Gus needs Ty to scrub floors and toilets for his cleaning business while he cooks up gambling schemes with the local mob boss, a man called "Lucy." When Lucy hears just how famous Ty's older brother is, he becomes suddenly friendly. Are the questions Lucy is asking Ty really about fantasy football . . . or is the Mafia using Ty to get valuable insider info from his superstar brother? Desperately worried, Ty must come up with a plan to save Thane's football careerand, ultimately, his life. Author of the New York Times bestselling Football Genius, former NFL player Tim Green will have you on the edge of your seat rooting for Tyand enjoying an up-close look at what it's like to be inside the NFL.

Football Hero by Tim Green is a RF book that would benefit students best when used in an LC. The action, suspense, and drama throughout the book keeps you on the edge of your seat while you follow Ty as he goes on his crazy adventure! This novel would be great for upper elementary students. https://b0f646cfbd7462424f7a-f9758a43fb7c33cc8adda0fd36101899.ssl.cf2.rackcdn.co... #ucflae3414sp21

Adodd1 The resource provided gives insight on the author and his other books. The UDL principal 6.1 can help students create goals while reading in their LC. The EL strategy best fit would be 2, providing cooperation through small groups. They could be with those who speak their native language as well to help with comprehension 4y
DrSpalding Many students love sports and providing books that relate to topics children enjoy is a wise move for any teacher. This could be a literature circle option or an independent reading option that you could simply provide in your classroom library. I would reserve literature circle options for award-winning titles. 4y

I just had to share a moment that made me so thrilled. As some of you know, my 12 year old son is NOT a reader. He thinks it is boring. Well, we read Football Hero together and finished it yesterday. We talked about the story as we read, etc. Tonight as I was telling him goodnight, he asked me "So what book are we going to read next, Mom?" I am bursting, lol! ?

TrishB It‘s finding the right book 😁 6y

Football Hero has a really great storyline and the characters were ones that I easily and quickly fell into. I loved Ty and his older brother, Thane, and completely detested Uncle Gus.There are several twists and turns, an underlying mob connection, and some football action to keep fans hanging on as they race through pages to see what happens next. Football Hero is a tale of family and morals as well as hard work and perseverance.

As some of you may remember, I asked about books for a reluctant 12 year old boy reader. I have challenged him to reading this book along with him. I am setting chapter goals each day for us to meet and then talk about what we read. This was his pick and I devoured the first 57 pages, lol. Needless to say, I am enjoying it... to my surprise!

Help! My 12 year old son hates reading. He says it's a waste of time! Ugh! Gasp! He loves football and has listened to/read books by Tim Green and loves listening but getting him to actually read a book is like pulling teeth. Any ideas?

LibrarianRyan If he likes audiobooks that is a good thing. Is it only sports stories or does he listen to other things as well. 6y
aprilpohren He listens to a wide range of genres, which is nice. Just worried that by listening instead of reading on his own, it will not help him better develop his reading skills. 6y
JackOBotts I remember reading Sports Illustrated for Kids when I was younger. Do they still publish that magazine? That may be a good launch pad, if it‘s still around... 6y

aprilpohren @JackOBotts They do still publish that and I have a subscription for my son. The problem is that at school every child has to read and test on at least one book in their lexile level every quarter. So he is often intimidated by the size of the books that are in his level. So that doesn't help in getting him to read either. 6y
Tamra @aprilpohren how about the Track series by Reynolds? My son at 11 still needs pics to keep him interested when reading on his own. He still loves Diary of Wimpy Kid and and devoured the 13 Story Tree House series, though I don‘t know what Lexile level it is. 6y
aprilpohren @Tamra I will check into that series! Thank you! 6y
JacqMac My 12 year old thinks he hates reading, too. But he loves graphic novels. And I‘m fine with it. I‘m just happy when he reads anything. 6y
