Ghost | Jason Reynolds
Ghost wants to be the fastest sprinter on his elite middle school track team, but his past is slowing him down in this first electrifying novel of a brand-new series from Coretta Scott King/John Steptoe Awardwinning author Jason Reynolds. Ghost. Lu. Patina. Sunny. Four kids from wildly different backgrounds with personalities that are explosive when they clash. But they are also four kids chosen for an elite middle school track teama team that could qualify them for the Junior Olympics if they can get their acts together. They all have a lot to lose, but they also have a lot to prove, not only to each other, but to themselves. Ghost has a crazy natural talent, but no formal training. If he can stay on track, literally and figuratively, he could be the best sprinter in the city. But Ghost has been running for the wrong reasonsit all starting with running away from his father, who, when Ghost was a very little boy, chased him and his mother through their apartment, then down the street, with a loaded gun, aiming to kill. Since then, Ghost has been the one causing problemsand running away from themuntil he meets Coach, an ex-Olympic Medalist who blew his own shot at success by using drugs, and who is determined to keep other kids from blowing their shots at life.

This book was about a guy who came on a field to watch the track practice and he saw the best guy on their team and noticed that everyone was cheering him up and telling him he was really fast even though ghost thought he was faster then him. Ghost got on the track and showed everyone that the guy wasn't that amazing then he left but the coach wanted him on the team, after they were trying to win the championship.THE BOOK HAS 192 PAGES.

I am posting this review late because I read it earlier in the year for a postal bookswap,

I've always heard of Jason Reynolds in the context of being a good choice for "reluctant readers." I can definitely see the appeal here with sports, single parent, outsider, urban, black representation and more. I loved that Ghost isn't perfect but that the consequences take a while to show up. I love the "found family" element.

This has been on my list forever, and it was just as good as everyone said it was! But I was surprised by how uplifting it actually was considering the backstory was dark. #TBRRead #WinterGames #JingleBallers @FantasyChick @StayCurious @Clwojick

I read this one with my 8th grade enrichment kids this nine weeks. They all hate reading and I wanted something they could relate to and enjoy. This was it. We all enjoyed the story of Ghost and his new track team and running mates. Fun book and first in a series.

Litten family I am in need of some help. I am doing 7th and 8th grade ELA intervention this year for the first time-I teach art! Anyway these kids are pretty low and hate reading. I want to do some novel studies with them but want to use books they can relate to-no Old Yeller for us! I started reading Ghost to them and they are really enjoying it. Any other books that would be relevant and engaging that you can recommend would be amazing! Thanks!

ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Not sure if this is the right level or too easy, but my son loved Fish in a Tree this year - he‘s in 6th grade. (He‘s not really a reader and loved it) - Also, my daughter read The Outsiders and loved it (but I haven‘t read it!) 5mo
Melissa_J My daughter, who doesn‘t like to read, was assigned The Outsiders last year in grade 7. She loved it! I‘m not sure what ELA is though, so I‘m not sure if I‘m giving an appropriate suggestion. (edited) 5mo

LibrarianRyan I like this because of 1 it's format, and even thought it is about 30 years old, it is still really relevant to politics (kids politics) today. 5mo

CoffeeK8 I second The Outsiders, I work with some very reluctant readers and they loved it. Also Holes is another good one. I‘d also look into graphics novels or audiobook options. Also are these classified kids or just low readers? That can make a difference in terms of what you need to modify for them. Also, build in time for them to choose their own books (or magazines) to read independently if you can, this helps with decreasing reluctance. 5mo
TheBookHippie @LauraBeth I second this book it‘s a favorite here with kids I work with. (edited) 5mo
hermyknee Holes is definitely a good one! My kids really enjoy it. The Percy Jackson books also work well and they‘ve recently been made into graphic novels! Nic Stone just wrote a middle grade novel: 5mo
hermyknee I use Love That Dog to teach poetry with my ESOL class, so your kids might enjoy it, too. But you‘ll cry! I cry every time 5mo
AsYouWish I agree with The Outsiders! I would also say Holes is a good one and in my past life as a sub, I subbed in a Sped. Ed reading class and we read Hoot (the students were 6th graders). And last year I was given our lower students for Intervention and I would try to play to their interests or pick out a few and give them the choice about which one they wanted. 5mo

I need a LOVE option for this little slice of perfection!!! What a voice Reynolds writes in! It was narrated PERFECTLY and I was cheering for Ghost and wanted to smack him upside the head at the same time!! A #DiverseMiddleGrade novel about a boy living with his mom after his dad gets put in jail for trying to shoot them. A sad beginning with a few pretty bad choices in the middle makes for an excellent story of perseverance and second chances.

Ghost was my book for our LA assignment. Ghost is a really good book and I really enjoyed it. The characters all had past stories and running seemed to help them. Castle Cranshaw (aka Ghost) is the main character and is one of my favourite characters because through his struggle he kept fighting and caring for his family. Patty is my favourite character because of her grit and her funny attitude and willingness to help. I rate the book 10/10

This book was a good read and I really liked the characters BUT I felt like I didn't really get a chance to know them bc this was such a short story. I also, bc I have read another story by this author, am beginning to dislike the open endings he's so fond of. I like that he leaves it up to the readers but sometimes closure is needed to complete a story. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

On a bit of a Jason Reynolds and YA run. Reynolds has a wonderful way of capturing the essence of a character, laying out the difficulties experienced and offering a heartfelt resolution for young readers to celebrate. 4.5⭐️ This was just such a wonderful book. Ghost is a young guy who comes from the wrong side of town. But he loves to run. He wants to be a big basketball star, his running is there, but not much else. He never realized that he could become an entirely new person by finding the fun in running. It started out as an “I‘ll show you” to the preps acting crazy on the track, but it will turn into a new family and mentor he never expected.

I LOVED Ghost - it spoke to my little runner‘s heart. Sometimes all it takes is for one person to believe in you and to give you a chance (and then when you mess up another chance - and when you mess up again- another chance) for you to believe in yourself.

You don‘t have to love running or track to love this story.

LauraBeth @saresmoore I can understand that! 13mo
saresmoore Do you have any tips or secrets? I just always feel like my lungs are going to explode. 13mo
LauraBeth @saresmoore it sounds like you need to work on increasing your VO2 Max. You can do this by doing some HIIT workouts (they can be in the form of some fartlek runs - basically - changing your pace throughout your run). For example - I ran 50 minutes on the treadmill the other day and had a base pace of 6 mph and would increase the speed by .1 or .2 and run that pace for 2 mins before going back down to base pace for 1-2 mins. (edited) 13mo
LauraBeth @saresmoore also - since you‘re on the smaller side, if your base pace is much lower, that‘s normal 😀 Someone I run with is about 5‘0 and she‘s running at 4.5 mph (edited) 13mo
saresmoore I hadn‘t even considered tracking my pace! I tend to be pretty consistent(ly slow), I think... But I imagine I could achieve a similar result by incorporating some sprints? Is there an app for that? 🤔 13mo
LauraBeth @saresmoore you can definitely incorporate some sprints throughout your run! I use an App called Aaptiv and LOVE it (it‘s one of the few apps I pay for bc I think it‘s worth it). They have excellent running workouts (at all levels) and they have a trainer, Meg, who has made me fall back in love with running. Bonus: the CEO/founder, Ethan, is a good-hearted person (I‘ve seen him do things for his customers that have made me a customer for life). 13mo

Great book!! A definite 'recommend read' for middle schoolers.
A story about an 8th grade boy who has had a lot of challenges in his life. He makes some bad decisions. He also discovers he can run, and he can run well. Becoming a part of a track team starts to change his life and what he focuses on every day.
It's a quick read! The next book in the series is called "Patina" and we get to know more about Patty who is also on the team w/Ghost.

I read Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds and loved it so I‘m trying a young adult title. Love the characters. Although this is marketed as for ages 10+ or grade 5 and up. I would probably suggest ages 11/12+ and be prepared to discuss gun violence, alcoholism, bullying.

Stopped by my local bookstore for a few more items for my #sss gift and I got a FREE copy of this book just for popping in on #smallbusinesssaturday

BookNAround I stopped at two here and one had these but they were keeping them to donate to a local literacy group and asking people who qualified for one to write a short note to the kiddo who will be gifted with the book. 14mo

Pickpick

A good story about a troubled young boy who doesn‘t make the best choices. Will a chance to be part of a team and a coach who‘s got his back be enough to get him on the right path????
