The Place on Dalhousie

'You look the type to break your father's heart.' 'Yeah, but he broke mine first.' When Rosie Gennaro first meets Jimmy Hailler, she has walked away from life in Sydney, leaving behind the place on Dalhousie that her father, Seb, painstakingly rebuilt for his family but never saw completed. Two years later, Rosie returns to the house and living there is Martha, whom Seb Gennaro married less than a year after the death of Rosie's mother. Martha is struggling to fulfil Seb's dream, while Rosie is coming to terms with new responsibilities. And so begins a stand-off between two women who refuse to move out of the home they both lay claim to. As the battle lines are drawn, Jimmy Hailler re-enters Rosie's life. Having always watched other families from the perimeters, he's now grappling, heartbreakingly, with forming one of his own . . . An unforgettable story about losing love and finding love; about the interconnectedness of lives and the true nature of belonging, from one of our most acclaimed writers.

I loved this book. It is so relatable and nostalgic as an Aussie but I think it would have wide appeal. A story of family and relationships, love and loneliness told with a gentle touch.
Hope your getting some time to read❣️📔

Wow! I did not expect to love this book as much as I did! That is one of the joys of reading, being surprised! Marchetta writes beautiful, real characters. This book made me laugh and cry and feel all warm and fuzzy! I didn‘t realise that it is actually the third in a series so I‘ve sourced the others and I have almost finished the first.

CarolynM I think I felt identically to you on this one. I was very surprised by how much I liked it. Haven't got around to the earlier ones yet. 4y

This was a really sweet Australian story by an author I‘ve read a lot and never been disappointed. What I didn‘t realise is this story is the third in a series (though you can read each as a stand alone) of which I‘ve already ready the first. Must chase down The Piper‘s Son now.

CarolynM I loved this one but I haven't read the earlier ones. They're on my list now🙂 5y

I confess the only other Melina Marchetta book I've read is Tell the Truth, Shame the Devil and I was not impressed, but I absolutely loved this tale of families lost, found and created. I'm going to have to read Saving Francesca and The Piper's Son now. #ozfiction

MrsMalaprop I heard her interviewed about fostering a child on Radio National the other day. Fascinating. 6y
CarolynM @MrsMalaprop That does sound interesting. Have you read this one? There's a thread about fostering/adoption. 6y

MrsMalaprop No I haven‘t read this one I‘ve read Alibrandi & Pipers Son. 6y
erzascarletbookgasm I have one of hers to be read 6y
JennyM I think I might have to give this one a go. I liked Tell the Truth, but couldn‘t get into any of her others, particularly Jellicoe Road. But this sounds good - great review 6y
CarolynM @JennyM I just didn't believe in Tell the Truth, although it was clear the woman can write. I found this one completely convincing and very easy to read. 6y

Little library haul today.

CarolynM Just pulled this one out to read myself🙂 6y
JennyM @CarolynM @Lauredhel looking forward to your thoughts on this. I enjoyed her last one 6y
CarolynM @JennyM I wasn't a fan of the last one, but I'm keeping an open mind about this one🙂 6y
Lauredhel @JennyM I haven't read it yet! I'm very behind. Not sure if I'll read this one till I can get it in ebook, the trade paperback is a bit bulky for me (but pretty). 6y

#BookMail Pt10 The last of the Aussie authors in this months mail is Melina Marchetta. The writer of the Aussie YA classic, Looking For Alibrandi, this is her 2nd adult novel, I think, after Tell the Truth, Shame The Devil in 2016. After leaving home as a teenager, Rosie has come back to the house her father Seb built when he dies. But living there is Martha, the woman he married after Rosie‘s mum passed away. So begins a standoff between the two.

JanuarieTimewalker13 Oooh, I‘m super interested in this one. I loved Jellicoe Road and Saving Francesca! 6y
CarolynM I have a copy of this to read. I was quite disappointed in her last one, hope this will be better. 6y

We are back in the inner west and I couldn‘t be happier. #aussieapril #aww2019

CarolynM This one's waiting for me. Are you enjoying it? 6y
AntoinetteBuchanan Yes well enough. A return to Sydney‘s inner West which was my home for many years, so there‘s that. But it is multi-layered and the first chapter is beautiful, almost lyrical. Solid 3.5 stars from me - just haven‘t had time to formulate a reasoned review. I read it through a bought of insomnia last night. (edited) 6y
