Fair Play | Tove Jansson

Pickpick

This short novel was my #bookspin for February. I'm not sure I quite know what it is about Tove Jansson's books that appeals to me so much. These characters made me want to revisit the Moomin books. I assume that Jonna, like Too-Ticky in the Moomin stories, was based on Tuulikki Pietilä. If you like The Summer Book, I think you'd like this, too.

When a friend found out I LOVE Fangirl (as you can see) she recommended E&P, which is such a ‘tug on your heart strings‘ story, that if you were the Grinch, your heart would be guaranteed to grow 3 sizes. It is wholesome, relatable, and so real. And that‘s why I love Rowell. She can write the sweetest of stories that we can all experience. I don‘t usually go for a dose of reality but when it‘s done right, it‘s beautiful.

Sight Hound: A Novel | Pam Houston

Pickpick

Full of quirky Houston characters, two (or three) dogs, and one sardonic cat, this novel celebrates love, human and canine, without being sappy or emotionally manipulative. Prose that brings the west to life, & a surprise cameo of someone I once knew who is neither fictional nor famous. (Houston once went to the same church as me and knew this man there which makes me wonder if he asked her to write him into one of her stories.) No. 8 #24in2024

Bette What a good tidbit…knowing a character. Great review. 👍😊 1d

My Husband: A Novel | Maud Ventura

Pickpick

What...an experience! I viscerally felt the narrator's exhaustive anxiety, desperation and neuroticism. While this work is hyperbolic, there is something unmistakably captured that exists in many heterosexual relationships that I have witnessed. I do think women can acceptably get away with losing themselves in a man and hiding from themselves and their real issues.

BirdLaVie I also think that a man who is in control of a relationship always knows (and unconsciously or consciously seeks out) that he is in control. The shifting power dynamics that exist between all of us were explored in a very tangible, heart-pounding way. Finishing this book was like getting off a dizzying roller coaster ride! 1d

Book no7
I borrowed this on a whim after seeing the film 😅
The third person narration is ok. A bit odd to me considering how much emotion is coming through Hadley's character as the story centers around her but all in all a solid read with a whirlwind romance, a bit of they will they or won't they trope, and the dialogue between Hadley and Oliver was cute and lent it itself nicely to a more believable romance for me than other young adults books.

I'm probably the only person that hasn't read this or watched the movie so my sister made me watch this past weekend. It was THE best love story but it wrecked me 😭
Now I'm needing Nicholas Sparks Book recommendations 😂

BeeCurious I liked Message in a Bottle but I read it a long time ago. Kevin Costner stars in the movie version. 🙂 2d
Reggie I‘ve read maybe 5 of them and nothing else he writes comes close to the Notebook. 2d
