The Home Edit: A Guide to Organizing and Realizing Your House Goals | Clea Shearer, Joanna Teplin
14 posts | 12 read | 7 to read
Theres decorating, and then theres organizing. From the Instagram-sensation home experts (with a serious fan club that includes Reese Witherspoon, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Mindy Kaling), here is an accessible, room-by-room guide to establishing new order in your home. Believe this: every single space in your house has the potential to function efficiently and look great. The mishmash of summer and winter clothes in the closet? Yep. Even the dreaded junk drawer? Consider it done. And the best news: its not hard to doin fact, it's a lot of fun. From the home organizers who made their orderly eye candy the method that everyone swears by comes Joanna and Cleas signature approach to decluttering. The Home Edit walks you through paring down your belongings in every room, arranging them in a stunning and easy-to-find way (hello, labels!), and maintaining the system so you don't need another do-over in six months. When you're done, you'll not only know exactly where to find things, but you'll also love the way it looks. A masterclass and look book in one, The Home Edit is filled with bright photographs and detailed tips, from placing plastic dishware in a drawer where little hands can reach to categorizing pantry items by color (there's nothing like a little ROYGBIV to soothe the soul). Above all, it's like having your best friends at your side to help you turn the chaos into calm.

A guide to decluttering and organising.

This was so helpful. Short easy to follow ideas. Plus hilarious anecdotes and tips from the authors. Love all the pictures making it fun and aesthetically pleasing. 5*

We all know I'm a total sucker for books about home organization, but this one fell a little flat for me. There's just a complete lack of actual practical application beyond “you should organize things like a rainbow because other people in your household will find it easy to put stuff away that way.“ That & “buy lots of bins“ were pretty much my takeaway messages from this one. There are loads of lovely photos so there are some concepts to be ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) gleaned from those, but as far as practical advice goes - it wasn't really anywhere to be found. Definitely glad this was one I checked out from the library. 3y
alisiakae I do feel their show and book are there to push their product line more so than offering practical tips. Lots of really pretty pictures, but very light on content. 3y
TheAromaofBooks @4thhouseontheleft - Yes, a lot of their text felt almost like advertising because it would be something like “we couldn't believe we were chosen to organize [insert famous person]'s pantry! It was so exciting!“ but then there are no “before“ pictures and no real explanation of how they went about the organizing. So it was fun to check out of the library & breeze through, but definitely not one I would keep around as reference material! 3y

Great companion to the Netflix series. Some great ideas, lots of eye candy and encouragement to get your ish sorted!

janeycanuck I‘m choosing to read this as commentary on the four-legged friend, not the book 🤪 4y
Julsmarshall @janeycanuck He would approve that choice! 4y

Meh. Pretty pictures but very little actual instruction. Basically just an ad for their products and services.

Still working my way through these organizing books—and the organizing itself! So far this one is mostly pretty pictures and not much practical advice but at least the pictures are really, really pretty 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

I have a Pinterest Board called 'I Can Dream'. Beautiful photos that give me some inspiration but are mostly unrealistic. Pretty much this whole book falls into that category. Yeah I could stand to do more organizing but it's never going to be this perfect. Not in this life. I do organize clothes, makeup, & nail polish by color. Makes it easier to coordinate. But Books? Pretty but impractical. 🤓

Crinoline_Laphroaig Also I have many things I would rather spend money on instead of plastic containers. Including this book. Definitely glad it was a Borrow not Buy. 5y
marleed My organization for my books is that they not be organized like a bookstore. My friends and family have fun seeing how my books are constantly rearranged. Right now I‘ve turned pages out on all my read books. It‘s a fun way at tackling the spines of my TBR - like a bingo game to flip to pages out! 5y
Crinoline_Laphroaig @marleed Oooh interesting way to see your TBR! 5y
marleed @Crinoline_Laphroaig I figured it would stay that way for a week. But honestly, I‘m obsessed decoding which shelf and which book gets to be flipped next! 5y

I enjoyed this but am surprised that this actually became a “book” (I use that term loosely). This seemed like a series of posts that were mostly strung together with a tiny bit of text in between. Liked the pictures though since I feel no pressure to recreate them or anything. And also listing Gwyneth Paltrow‘s goop website as a place to get inspiration does not work for me at all 🤷🏻‍♀️ I‘m just saying. And also -👇🏽

Smrloomis This is the smallest number of books I‘ve finished in the last 5 years at least. Here‘s hoping 2020 will be better! 🤞🏽 5y

This is from Kacey Musgraves‘s closet and I can‘t lie, that fringe looks great. Just in case you‘ve somehow missed her: https://youtu.be/Kw0ih4jPOBo

Smrloomis @TrishB 😂 do you think you have more than 35? I think that‘s about what this guy has. He‘s no Imelda Marcos but still it‘s a lot. 5y

Enjoying this but y‘all, this isn‘t a tip. This is what their “tips” mostly consist of so if you‘re annoyed by that, you won‘t like this book.

This book was very good! I loved learning about their stories and what they do. This book gives good advice and examples if you are trying to organize your house. It is funny, but also detailed and educational. This book is similar to “The life-changing magic of tidying up“ by Marie Condo but more pleasant to read because of the inspirational pictures throughout.

I don't often review books like these on here though I do request and read them through the library. In this case, I thought I would write something up because so many folks ask me about organizing things. I believe that this book would be extremely helpful to anyone who's looking to create an "everything's in its place" vibe in their home. There's humor but also practical advice for each section of your house. Biggest takeaway? Start small!

ImperfectCJ The cover photos of these kinds of organization books always draw me in. They promise so much order, a respite from chaos. Or at least neatly organized chaos. :-) 5y

I held out on buying this book as long as I could! The KonMari method hasn‘t worked for me so far, so I‘m trying to cobble together a mash-up if that, @thehomeedit, and some “Unf*ck Your Habitat”, with a dash of “The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning” (I tried hygge first, that didn‘t take, either).
