A detective's daughter knows it is H. H. Holmes who is kidnapping the young ladies in Chicago during the World Fair. She decides to work for Holmes to find clues, falling in love with her bodyguard too. There were times I thought it was very slow, but when Winnie was on the precipice of finding something, I felt goosebumps because I knew what was coming. Good story, but not historical. #howdunit #BBRC @LibrarianRyan

Has anyone read this? I am having trouble finding a #howdunit Lists are giving me guides to writers. A howdunit tells the story backwards. You already know whom the criminal is. The book is about the trap. Can someone tell me if this book follows that definition? The last review was three years ago. Or tell me another one to read?? Thanks a bunch.

I jump at anything connected to the 1893 Chicago World‘s Fair, and the HH Holmes murders from that year. I‘d been excited about this book since Barbour announced it. What I got, however, wasn't exactly what I'd hoped for.

Grace Hitchcock creates a world one doesn‘t want to leave in The White City. Set as the Chicago World Fair opens in 1893, our leading lady Winnifred sees before her a woman kidnapped and yet, aside from her word, she has no evidence so is brushed aside by the local police force. Her father, and inspector, knows better than to believe she‘ll let it slide and assigns her a detective.

An old maid at 20, huh? Whoa!
I'm enjoying this read so far! Very light read with some comedy and what looks like a blooming romance. ♡

I'm always happy when a book uses the word "whacking!" A sound that can be heard when it is said!
