“For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?”
This quote from the Gospel of Mark is what came to mind as I sat down to write this review. Gray Delacroix is a man of means. In the aftermath of the Civil War, his father [...] started over and built an empire around the importation of various spices.

Confession time: the only reason I knew of the daughters of Zelophehad before Barbara M. Britton began her series on them is that I know a woman named Tirzah. Using the meagre amount of information about the family found in the book of Numbers, Britton has crafted a tale of the final years of the Exodus from a female perspective.

The End of the Magi | Patrick W. Carr

Patrick W. Carr is known for his fantasy novels, and these aren‘t usually novels in which I have an interest. But when I saw a new novel with the title of the End of the Magi, well, I knew I was probably looking at a work of Biblically-based fiction. And I do find those interesting.

Approximately 10 months ago, I had the honor of reviewing a novella by the name of Fate of the Watchman. I described it as a variation of A Christmas Carol, with an ordinary man shown the harsh reality of the world while the clock stayed stuck at 12 midnight. I also wondered what would happen next for this man and for the being that had been his guide…

Regina Scott's newest novel is not only an historical romance. . It was the suspense-filled narrative that kept me hooked.

Bottom line after reading Take Back Your Time? Tyree‘s book is for everyone who longs to be more organized with their day, regardless of what season of life they‘re in. I know I need to get organized, and I know that Tyree‘s method is doable. https://mccombsonmain.wordpress.com/2019/08/20/non-fiction-review-take-back-your...

How much can we, today, possibly understand about the Reconstruction era? What was it like for the freedmen (and women) of the south who broke boundaries and fought for justice, often at the expense of their own lives? Can I, a white woman in the 21st century, ever hope to fully grasp the hopes and disappointments of that time?

What was it like to be a slave in Roman times? What was it like to be a slave or slave owner in a Christian home during that time? These are questions that John Byron attempts to answer in A Week in the Life of a Slave. This new book, mostly fiction with sidebars of facts and the author‘s opinions, is based upon Paul‘s letters to the Colossians and Philemon in the New Testament. https://wp.me/p1xW0b-20C

I jump at anything connected to the 1893 Chicago World‘s Fair, and the HH Holmes murders from that year. I‘d been excited about this book since Barbour announced it. What I got, however, wasn't exactly what I'd hoped for.

Imagine not having a source of running water in your home. Imagine you have to walk to a communal water pump to get your water. Imagine, further, that the water isn‘t exactly crystal clear. This was the case for much of Britain until the 20th century. In A Murderous Malady, Christine Trent takes readers back to London in 1854 when little was known about health and hygiene. https://wp.me/p1xW0b-1Z3 #suspense #mystery #historical

I can‘t deny that I‘m a James Markert fan. I‘ve read his three of his previous novels and loved each one. My one fear of each new release is that it won‘t be as good as the one before. Because there has to be a dud somewhere, right? I mean, no one can consistently produce excellent novels, surely?

I‘ve read only three titles of the Narnia series, and only two of C.S. Lewis‘s non-fiction books. I watched Shadowlands once and didn‘t really enjoy it. I never visited Oxford, despite living in Britain for 22 years. What do I know about the former Atheist turned Christian? How much would I need to know in order to enjoy Becoming Mrs. Lewis? #Christfic #hisfic

Mesu Andrews has written another amazing story based on the contents of the Bible. Of Fire and Lions has caused me to look again at the Old Testament, just as her previous books have, and has helped me understand better a section of it. It was enjoyable enough that I had a hard time putting it down.
