Jose Rizal was a prominent advocate for reforms in the Philippines during the Spanish colonial era. He is considered a national hero and a martyr of the Philippine Revolution.

Excellent prompt! I've had this one on my TBR for a few years now. Probably ought to bump it higher on my priority list, maybe add it to my Cavalcade of Classics list.

Emilymdxn I‘d never heard of this before but it looks so good! Stacked 4y

I've been trying to finish this book for two years but I keep losing track of the plot and the characters.

I feel TERRIBLE for giving up because I got this book as a gift in the most amazing way but I'm starting to think that I'm going to need to pick it up fresh and start over in the future. So much book guilt about this one though.

Tamra Dump the guilt and move on with pleasure to your next book! 😄 7y
SkeletonKey @Tamra - I'm going to take your advice! 😂 7y
Tamra @SkeletonKey it‘s like food - matter of taste. I don‘t like squishy broccoli and I‘m done trying! 😂😂 7y
SkeletonKey @Tamra - LOL true. I usually don't have trouble stopping but it was such a thoughtful gift at the time! 7y
Tamra @SkeletonKey gift - that would make it harder for sure. But you did try! 7y

Lovely day for a #litsypartyofone.

I'm going to tackle some of these books that I've put on the back burner...some of them for over a year. Yikes. I love the bottom three but this might be my last attempt on the top two. I can't stay awake for Outlander and Noli Me Tangere is good, but kind of rough for me.

Bought these board books based on Filipino classics for a friend's baby. I always try to buy kiddie books written by Filipino authors whenever I buy gifts but they're so hard to find in local bookstores. Sometimes when I find a good one, there's only a battered copy left. So these were happy finds.👌

The ceiling at Tweedle Book Cafe has surnames of various authors. Rizal is our national hero and his novels Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo are required reading in high school.

Dogearedcopy I have to admit that I'm a little surprised that there aren't more Spanish authors on the boards. Is Cervantes up there somewhere? 7y
Chachic @Dogearedcopy Nope, Cervantes isn't in there. I'm curious, why were you expecting more Spanish authors? 7y
Dogearedcopy I have family in the Philippines and in the US; and they all seem to be fluent in both Spanish and English as well as Tagalog and Pangasinan. I've never been to the Philippines myself, so my impressions are a bit skewed! 7y

Chachic @Dogearedcopy That's interesting, because speaking fluent Spanish is not common for Filipinos. I don't speak Spanish and none of the people in my personal network does. We do have a lot of Spanish words mixed with Tagalog in our national language (called Filipino) but I've heard from fluent Spanish speakers that we've skewed the meaning of the words. 7y
