Scent of Magic | Maria V Snyder

As the last Healer in the Fifteen Realms, Avry of Kazan is in a unique position: in the minds of friends and foes alike, she no longer exists. Despite her need to prevent the megalomaniacal King Tohon from winning control of the Realms, Avry is also determined to find her sister and repair their estrangement. And she must do it alone, as Kerrick, her partner and sole confidant, returns to Alga to summon his country into battle. Though she should be in hiding, Avry will do whatever she can to support Tohon's opponents. Including infiltrating a holy army, evading magic sniffers, teaching forest skills to soldiers and figuring out how to stop Tohon's most horrible creations yet: an army of the walking dead--human and animal alike and nearly impossible to defeat. War is coming and Avry is alone. Unless she figures out how to do the impossible...again.

So wê are going in nearly full lock-down again... Which will not change most of my life but I am wondering if I should make it a reading challenge. So should I read the 'classics' I have never read (Dickens, proust...) or just try to finish all the series I have going on at once?

TrishB I think in these circumstances whatever makes you happy 😁 (edited) 4y
catsuit_mango @TrishB i have a vague idea that serious classics might not be so much happiness inducing but sometimes I'm surprised ;) 4y
TrishB Very true! 4y

Even though I am not a fan of the cover, I do love Snyder as an author. Now that I finished reading for classes during the semester, I can enjoy books of my own choosing for a while!

ravenlee Is this a standalone, or part of a series? 5y
WriterAtHeart @ravenlee - This is book 2 of a trilogy. The first book is called "Touch of Power". 5y
ravenlee Thank you! It sounds interesting but I hate finding out partway in that it‘s out of order. 5y

King Tohon has a hunger for power. He will consume anyone who gets in his way, adding them to his army of the dead...

Avery, a healer, may be the only one who can stand in his way!

Scent of Magic is the second book in the Healer series by Maria V. Snyder. Touch of Power (first book) was so good you guys! I read it within a day and now I am ready to dive into this world again. HIGHLY recommend reading anything from Snyder actually. Her books are very well written, funny at times and definitely make you want to come back for more!

Are you reading any series right now?

It's not you, it's me. I had a deadline to finish this series and return the books, and it just wasn't happening for me. I will pick these up again, perhaps after a repeat reading of book 1 (which I loved) so that I'm immersed in the world and can remember what's going on. Even though it's my favorite genre, I find high fantasy really hard to get back into if I've been away a while!

Goodreads says I've read it but the blurb is unfamiliar... Hmmm! Another book to add to the reread pile 😅

Any other Snyder fans out there? I heard her speak at a local bookshop when she visited Australia - and she was incredible! And she wrote cute messages in my books!

Chessa I loved the Poison Study series! And I liked Inside Out, too. 8y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag I love the original Poison study trilogy (haven't gotten around to the new stuff yet, Inside Out has been on my shelf forever and the Healer trilogy... I need to work on buying books and not reading them issue! 8y

I flew through this yesterday! SO GOOD!!!!! I love all the political intrigue, all the friendships & the relationship between Avry & Kerrick. I'm going to be sad when I finish this series! Also, those lilies kind of give me the creeps in the same way sunflowers do. 😬🌻💀

sarahgreatlove Oooo. Can't wait! 9y
