I started this today and I am feeling very meh about it. Possibly because of the state of the world right now, but the main character seems incredibly vapid and the overall tone of the book might be too flippant for me. It doesn't seem as lightheaded as her mystery books but also not as serious as the time period deserves? If you read it let me know what you thought!!

An enjoyable WWI read, centering on the experience of the land girls. Not really a mystery, FYI, and not quite as good as In Farleigh Field, but fun nonetheless. I do enjoy Bowen‘s books, especially the Royal Spyness romps. And it was my #doublespin! I‘ve got a few possible bingoes lined up, and I need to get any summer themed books read fast. I can‘t stand out-of-season reading. Onward!

EadieB @Andrew65 Great idea to go right before the store closes and late in the evening. I have a pickup in the parking lot for tomorrow. My husband is going. I'm not going out anytime soon. (edited) 4y

Andrew65 @EadieB Done that a lot over the past few weeks. We were just down to 4 potatoes! And milk and bread dwindling as was our fruit and eat a lot of fruit will my changes in diet. 4y

Andrew65 @EadieB Same for us, my wife said do you want me to come and sit in car said no. With her health issues, like you wasn‘t allowing her to go out. Hard to get click and collect, and no home delivery slots for the next two weeks! (edited) 4y

Andrew65 @EadieB I like the way Boris Johnson has led this, bit do feel the shutdown should have come a few days or week sooner, especially in London . Although he and Prince Charles have got the virus now, as well as the Health Secretary. (edited) 4y

EadieB @Andrew65 I agree! I think he was a bit late on the shutdown. The New York governor is doing a good job but the mayor early was telling people to ride the subways and go to the restaurant and bars and now the city is doing really bad. Probably like London. Sorry to see they all got the virus. (edited) 4y

Andrew65 @EadieB I think the problem for us was a lot of people not taking it seriously enough early enough. Unbelievable how busy tourist spots were last weekend! People are stupid. Read today how well one of the early flash points in New York has stabilised the position with tough action. 4y

EadieB @Andrew65 Yes they are doing a bit better but still pretty bad and New Jersey tripled their cases in one day. New Orleans is very bad too because of the stupid people celebrating St. Patrick's Day when things were really bad. They just don't believe that maybe they may die. 4y

Reading Historical novels I often find myself wondering what I would do if I lived in that Time Period. Don't think I would have been a very good nurse but I would have made an excellent Land Girl. Land Girls and Herb Garden was the most interesting part of story. Rest was fairly predictable. It lacked Author's usual sparkle that I've come to expect from reading her Royal Spyness Series. Different genre so understand change in tone. 👩‍🌾

I didn‘t like it as much as Bowen‘s several mystery series or even the other two stand-alone novels. The writing seemed a little simplistic and the plot and conclusion were very predictable. It was a pleasant read, but not what I‘ve come to expect from the author. 3.5/5.0 ⭐️ #2019

Magnificent! Highly recommended for Maisie Dobbs fans. Read it from cover to cover. Definitely stacking her other standalone titles. I‘ve long enjoyed her “Her Royal Spyness” series. #WWI #historicalfiction

A sweet and calming standalone historical fiction read. Set in England during WW1, this is a great read that talks about land girls, victory gardens, and herbal remedies. Some parts were predictable, but a good predictable. I really enjoyed this! I voluntarily reviewed an eARC copy provided by the publisher via NetGalley.
