The White Card
The White Card: A Play | Claudia Rankine
4 posts | 2 read | 3 to read
A play about the imagined fault line between black and white lives by Claudia Rankine, the author of Citizen The White Card stages a conversation that is both informed and derailed by the black/white American drama. The scenes in this one-act play, for all the characters disagreements, stalemates, and seeming impasses, explore what happens if one is willing to stay in the room when it is painful to bear the pressure to listen and the obligation to respond. from the introduction by Claudia Rankine Claudia Rankines first published play, The White Card, poses the essential question: Can American society progress if whiteness remains invisible? Composed of two scenes, the play opens with a dinner party thrown by Virginia and Charles, an influential Manhattan couple, for the up-and-coming artist Charlotte. Their conversation about art and representations of race spirals toward the devastation of Virginia and Charless intentions. One year later, the second scene brings Charlotte and Charles into the artists studio, and their confrontation raises both the stakes and the questions of whatand whois actually on display. Rankines The White Card is a moving and revelatory distillation of racial divisions as experienced in the white spaces of the living room, the art gallery, the theater, and the imagination itself.

I am in a reading SLUMP. I haven‘t finished January‘s #Bookspin pick yet despite really liking it (The Shadow of the Wind), but will soon. I have hopes that my reading will pick up again and am looking forward to seeing what February‘s pick will be.

BarbaraBB So many good ones on this list 🤍 4y
TheAromaofBooks I hate those reading slumps!!! The mojo will return eventually, though. Sometimes my brain just needs a break or something, I think haha 4y
KarenUK Really great list.... 💕 4y
SamAnne Me too. I have nut finished a book this month. I have read maybe 50 pages. The Capitol riot and insanity, fear for the Inauguration, and crazy work hours. Hope to do a little reading this weekend. 4y

This list (link below) was great for ideas, many of which I can heartily recommend and many more of which I now want to read! https://www.popsugar.com/entertainment/

GingerAntics I LOVE this idea. I was afraid I wasn‘t going to get to participate because I only get paid at the end of the month, but then Born A Crime went on sale and I had just enough. I couldn‘t get two, but I happily bought what I could. Fingers crossed there is a total weekly top 10 take over!!! 🤞🏻 4y
GingerAntics I want to read EVERY book on that list. 4y
dylanisreading Great list. Thank you for sharing. Americanah and The Mothers are out of stock on Amazon until later this month! 4y

Liz_M @Bianca If you are in the US, both are in-stock at Bookshop.org and you can have the proceeds for the sale go to a black-owned bookshop (it takes a little poking around to do this). (edited) 4y
dylanisreading @Liz_M I ordered a bunch of books from Semicolon, a black woman-owned indie bookstore in Chicago but was looking at Amazon for a Father‘s Day gift since they‘re still shipping faster than everyone else. Just thought it was cool the two novels have sold out in at least one place. 🙂 4y
Liz_M @Bianca Nice! Most of the other popular choices, How to Be an Antiracist, Stamped from the Beginning, The Fire This Time, etc are all on backorder on Bookshop.org and my local indie. 🙂 4y

I caught the cold that‘s been going around so I‘m a bit out of sorts. Threw a pot roast together for dinner and now settling in with some tea and this quick read.
