Redwood and Ponytail
Redwood and Ponytail | K.A. Holt
13 posts | 13 read | 8 to read
Kate and Tam meet, and both of their worlds tip sideways. At first, Tam figures Kate is your stereotypical cheerleader; Kate sees Tam as another tall jock. And the more they keep running into each other, the more they surprise each other. Beneath Kate's sleek ponytail and perfect faade, Tam sees a goofy, sensitive, lonely girl. And Tam's so much more than a volleyball player, Kate realizes: She's everything Kate wishes she could be. It's complicated. Except it's not. When Kate and Tam meet, they fall in like. It's as simple as that. But not everybody sees it that way. This novel in verse about two girls discovering their feelings for each other is a universal story of finding a way to be comfortable in your own skin.

This is a story of two girls figuring out who they are and how to truly be themselves. It is told in verse, mostly alternating, but sometimes with dual voices as on this page, and including a chorus. I can be critical of novels in verse, but I think this one uses the format as well as any I‘ve read recently.

I simply adore this book. It‘s the YA lesbian story I needed when I was in middle school/high school. Given the way it‘s written, it‘s easy to read in one day. I couldn‘t put it down. I highly recommend it. Tam and Kate meet each other after school one day. And then all of a sudden they keep running into each other. Pretty soon they‘re friends...but maybe want to be more than friends. And if that‘s the case, what does that mean exactly?

PerksOfBeingABookworm I think it‘s listed as young adult, but could very easily be a middle grade read. The characters are in high school, but it doesn‘t feel like the book is solely targeted at high schoolers. 4y

Two girls in Grade 7 fall in love with each other and learn “there‘s no such thing as normal.” A sweet story —not saccharine—told in verse, which keeps the pace breezy. Voice alternates between the two main characters, with an occasional chorus by three onlooking girls named Alex. The #audiobook has five narrators, one for each voice, with words sometimes delivered in unison: it‘s a lovely production. #LGBTQ

Very cute MG about two girls "falling in like". Sweet and innocent, but I appreciated the struggles that they each felt with their own families and how that affected their actions at school. Told in verse, switching perspectives, and the poems sometimes came together in cool ways. I wasn't a huge fan of the "chorus" pages, I guess you could call them. But I whipped through this in an afternoon.

Lindy I‘ve got this queued up in audio; looking forward to listening soon. 👍 5y
Kaylamburson Ohhh, I bet it's interesting in audio since it's so lyrical. You'll have to let me know how it goes! @Lindy 5y

I read this 4 months ago when it came out and loved it! I wanted to make sure it was on the radar of the #middlegradeMarch readers 😊 Great story of two middle school girls “falling in like” and figuring out what the means. Told in verse, two perspectives. #huggable

I really enjoyed this MG novel in verse about two middle school girls who meet and instantly fall into deep like. Tam is a volleyball player, Kate a cheerleader and when they meet, worlds collide—navigating different friend groups, parents, and the world at large, the two must decide to be true to themselves, and each other, or to what other people expect. A great story about first love and being comfortable with who you are. Recommended.
