The Chocolate Maker's Wife
The Chocolate Maker's Wife | Karen Brooks
9 posts | 2 read | 20 to read
Australian author Karen Brooks rewrites women back into history with this sweeping, breathtakingly researched tale of 17th century London. Set against the backdrop of Restoration London, the plague and the Great Fire, this is a tale of cruelty, revenge, redemption, love and hope, and the sweet, sinister temptation of chocolate. Damnation has never been so sweet... When Rosamund Tomkins enters the world she is so different, with her darkling eyes and strange laughter, that the midwives are afraid, believing her a changeling. But Rosamund's life is set to be anything but enchanted... Born into poverty, brutalised and ignored by her family, it is only when she is married off to a nobleman that her life undergoes a wondrous transformation, as he recognises that Rosamund infuses magic she does not know she possesses into everything she touches. Clever, quick and irrepressible, Rosamund soon becomes the darling of the haute ton, and presides over her luxurious chocolate house where the rich go to be seen and indulge in their favourite pastime, drinking the sweet and heady drink to which they've become oddly addicted. But Rosamund stands on the brink of losing all she has worked so hard to achieve and will be forced to make a choice: walk away from all she knows and has grown to love with her soul intact, or make a deal with the devil?

This is a decent story, but in need of some serious editing. It is overly long, repetitive, and with way too many characters. The author clearly did a lot of research and seemed determined to use every bit of it in this novel. And that‘s not even considering the lack of proof reading! Spelling errors, questionable grammar and usage broke my concentration constantly. I‘ll put a full review on LibraryThing, as this was #earlyreviewer book.

Suet624 Oh dear. 5y

Having a “me” day today. Stopped for #coffeeandbook before going to get my nails done. I probably should have had a chocolate pastry, but the orange scone looks so good 😄

I realize that I‘m reading an uncorrected proof copy of this book. But the misprints and the apparent lack of editing is distracting me from the content. And “noone” for “no one” is driving me crazy. I‘ve checked several references, and they concur that it‘s incorrect. But it‘s consistently used thus far. The author is Australian. Is it correct usage there?

Clare-Dragonfly I see “illwill” on the next line too! 5y
Lynnsoprano @Clare-Dragonfly There are so many of these things! So far it‘s a good story, but I really feel these should have been caught earlier. 5y
bibliobliss That would distract me as well 5y
Socal1 That kind of things drive me crazy. 5y

Time to start this #earlyreviewer book. This is the first one of these that‘s a #chunkster. My expectations are high for this one.

Sunraven Haha, “chunkster.” I love that there are 396 posts tagged with that. 5y
AbigailDays This one looks interesting! How do you become an early reviewer? 5y
Lynnsoprano @AbigailDays It‘s through the website LibraryThing. It‘s a good site for cataloging your books, but you can also sign up for early reviewer. Each month there‘s a list of books available and you choose what you‘re interested in. You don‘t get one each time, but I‘ve been pretty lucky. 5y
Crazeedi @Lynnsoprano I sign up for some every month have never gotten one ☹ 5y
Lynnsoprano @Crazeedi I can‘t figure it, because I signed up a year ago in March, and this is my eighth book! I usually only put requests on one or two each month, which makes my success rate crazy. I do always make sure to post reviews. Don‘t worry, it will happen one of these days. 5y

"As she fights for her life and those she loves through the ravages of the Plague and London‘s Great Fire, Rosamund‘s breathtaking tale is one marked by cruelty and revenge; passion and redemption—and the sinfully sweet temptation of chocolate.”
