Prayer
Prayer | Philip Yancey
8 posts | 5 read | 1 reading | 6 to read
In his most powerful message since Whats So Amazing About Grace? and The Jesus I Never Knew, Philip Yancey explores the intimate place where God and humans meet in this Prayer Ebook. Polls reveal that 90 percent of people pray. Yet prayer, which should be the most nourishing and uplifting time of the believers day, can also be frustrating, confusing, and fraught with mystery. Yancey probes such questions as: Is God listening? Why should God care about me? If God knows everything, whats the point of prayer? Why do answers to prayer seem so inconsistent? Why does God sometimes seem close and sometimes seem far away? How can I make prayer more satisfying? Yancey tackles the tough questions and in the process comes up with a fresh new approach to this timeless topic. I have learned to pray as a privilege, not a duty, he says, and he invites you to join him on this all-important journey.

5/5 🌟

I have been dipping in and out of this book for many weeks and believe it will be a reference book for me for years to come.

Yancey writes candidly of the questions and problems around prayer. The heart of the book always returns back to prayer as a way to know, communicate with and spend time with a God who loves everyone. Everyone. That this communication can help change our own hearts and the world is part of the miracle.

the_hibernator I've read a bit of this book and found it inspirational 8y

"For a recovering fundamentalist, it takes courage to trust that the gospel truly is good news from a God who is love."

A Franciscan Benediction

May God bless you with discomfort at easy answers, half-truths, and superficial relationships so that you may live deep within your heart.

May God bless you with anger at injustice, oppression, and exploitation of people, so that you may work for justice, freedom and peace...

#Shelfie

I'm currently reading a couple of things at the moment, including Prayer by Phillip Yancey. It's changing the way I interact with God and the world, including noticing, appreciating and calling out things that are beautiful. And as every Litten knows, a #shelfie can be a beautiful and joy producing thing! I hope you like mine.

Laura317 Lovely shelfie, indeed! I like your Star Wars model (I'm not up on the name, but I do recognize it.) 8y
Libby1 Thanks, @Laura317 . It's an AT-AT. I didn't know this myself 6 months ago but I have a 6 year-old son so now I know! 8y
CoffeeAndABook Thx for reminding me of how helpful & inspiring Yancey's books are. I read an amazing book by him a few years back & I might just need to read this one at this time in my life. 😌 And yes, great shelfie!! 👍 8y
