It's 1935. Rita Feuerstahl comes to the university in Krakow intent on enjoying her freedom. But life has other things in store--marriage, a love affair, a child, all in the shadows of the oncoming war. When the war arrives, Rita is armed with a secret so enormous that it could cost the Allies everything, even as it gives her the will to live. She must find a way both to keep her secret and to survive amid the chaos of Europe at war. Living by her wits among the Germans as their conquests turn to defeat, she seeks a way to prevent the inevitable doom of Nazism from making her one of its last victims. Can her passion and resolve outlast the most powerful evil that Europe has ever seen? In an epic saga that spans from Paris in the '30s and Spain's Civil War to Moscow, Warsaw, and the heart of Nazi Germany, The Girl from Krakow follows one woman's battle for survival as entire nations are torn apart, never to be the same.

This just wasn't for me. The epic scope of the book is ambitious and the author has clearly done an impressive amount of research, but I found it difficult to follow and some of the writing was icky to be honest.

Crazy busy day. Finally having a late lunch. Fast food was a necessity. Lettuce wrapped teen burger and a diet root beer. And a little time to read. Ahhh....

Nice to hit #Poland in my trip. I remember enjoying James A Michener‘s Poland Saga, cleverly titled Poland, and the tagged book.

I‘ve read a lot of books about Jewish survival during WWII and this one doesn‘t come close to most of those. There was something lacking in this story. So much of what the characters did felt forced and overly heroic. There were moments that the author forced humor that just didn‘t fit. The tied in a neat bow ending bothered me as well. I‘m glad I didn‘t pay for this one.

Good novel about the horrors and some of the heroes of the second world war. Nothing made it particularly stand out - but if you like reading about this subject/era then you'll like this.
Think I'm probably done with WW2 books for a while though - seem to have done so many recently time to take a break.

Andrew65 This was an enjoyable read. 7y
TrishB @Andrew65 it was! I think I just got to the saturation point with WW2 novels for a while. I will come back to them though. 7y

This was good. I listened on audible. It was long, covering many years, relationships and events in WW2. I loved Rita's character. Also loved the accents!

Meh. This book really failed at creating a connection with me. Despite the setting, lots of drama and several love stories I never cared about any of the characters. It wasn't boring, just... Too cold? Too weird. Too implausible. I never even believed the mother truly cared for her son...
