Life of the Party
Life of the Party: Poems | Olivia Gatwood
13 posts | 13 read | 15 to read
A dazzling debut collection of raw and explosive poems about growing up in a sexist, sensationalized world, from a "ferocious" (BBC), "beautifully vulnerable" (Nylon) new talent. i'm a good girl, bad girl, sad girl, dream girl girl next door sunbathing in the driveway i wanna be them all at once, i wanna be all the girls i've ever loved Lauded for the power of her writing and having attracted an online fan base of millions for her extraordinary spoken-word performances, Olivia Gatwood is a thrilling new voice in contemporary feminist poetry. In Life of the Party, she weaves together her own coming of age with an investigation into our culture's romanticization of violence against women. In precise, searing language--at times blistering and riotous, at times soulful and exuberant--she explores the boundary between what is real and what is imagined in a life saturated with fear. How does one grow from a girl to a woman in a world wracked by violence? Where is the line between perpetrator and victim? What is the meaning of bravery? Visceral and haunting, this multifaceted collection illustrates that what happens to our bodies makes us who we are.

A book of poems that focus on violence against women. I first heard of Gatwood from watching Button Poetry spoken word. Some of her poems from there are featured here.

I‘ve loved Gatwoods poems since I heard Ode to my Bitch Face on social media. This book of poems followed themes of being obsessed with true crime, specifically revolving around violence against women. It was relatable because I often indulge in books/podcasts that center around violence against my better judgement. I already live in constant fear of attack, why make it worse? Other themes of adolescent love, queer love, and healing

sarahlandis Also, a few repeat poems in this book that were also in My American Best Friend: an ode to the women of long island, and ode to my bitch face. Great to read both of those poems again (edited) 4y

I‘ve been obsessed with Olivia Gatwood since I heard her poem “Ode to The Women On Long Island” (strongly recommend you all check it out on YouTube!) and I‘m so excited I was finally able to pick up her debut collection as an early birthday present to myself 🤩

I read this Jan 7-13 & rated it 4 ⭐️. I liked this one better than My New American Best Friend. She‘s definitely a poet to watch. This collection of poems deals with violence against women.

A poetry collection centered around violence against women, ranging from true-crime obsessions with serial killers to violence we horrifyingly come to think of as everyday, mundane. Several of the poems in this collection gave me goosebumps or brought me to tears; it's somehow simultaneously intimate and universal, always powerful. I'm trying to read more poetry this year and am still newer to it. #boutofbooks

Poems that speak to that little primal voice found deep inside every female-identifying person... horrifying, potent, and timely.

What a phenomenal book of poetry. Fixating on our obsessions with true crime, victims, and the possession of women‘s bodies, Gatwood is just absolutely fucking phenomenal. Probably the best book of poetry I‘ve ever read.
