Newbery Honor Book Turtle in Paradise is beloved by readers, and now they can return to this wonderful world through the eyes of Turtles cousin Beans. Grown-ups lie. Thats one truth Beans knows for sure. He and his gang know how to spot a whopper a mile away, because they are the savviest bunch of barefoot conchs (that means locals) in all of Key West. Not that Beans really minds; its 1934, the middle of the Great Depression. With no jobs on the island, and no money anywhere, who can really blame the grown-ups for telling a few tales? Besides, Beans isnt anyones fool. In fact, he has plans. Big plans. And the consequences might surprise even Beans himself. Praise: As a storyteller, Holm is superb. School Library Journal Holm impressively wraps pathos with comedy. Booklist Anyone interested in learning to write crowd-pleasing historical fiction for elementary school readers would be wise to study Holms work. Publishers Weekly, starred review Sweet, funny and superb. Kirkus Reviews, Starred Review From the Hardcover edition.

This HF, Scott O‘Dell Award winning book is about the aftermath of the Great Depression in Key West, Fl. Seen through the eyes of our protagonist Beans. Along with his crew and tag along brother, Beans watch as his poverty stricken town is transformed into something on the front page of a brochure. This novel would be good for a LC. The Read write think website supplies the perfect lesson plan to have a successful LC with the book #ucflae3414sp21

Sdemps Http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/lesson-plans/literature-circles-getting-started-19.html?tab=4#tabs UDL 8.3 Foster collaboration and community, and EL strategy 2 promote cooperation(small groups) are both met with using a LC for this book. 4y

This HF- LC book is about a boy living in the keys during the Great Depression. This book has a Scott Odell award. https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/its-full-beans... here is a good lesson plan and activities to do with this book.

Nrossi UDL 3.1, teaching the students about the Great Depression and EL 42 by making a timeline of the events in the book. #ucflae3414sp21 4y
DrSpalding Your summaries require a bit more detail. English learner strategy 42 works beautifully with quality historical fiction. This book works well to complement social studies instruction in fourth grade. 4y

⚖️Full of Beans is a HF prequel to Jennifer Holm‘s Turtle in Paradise and won the Scott O‘dell Book Award. It is based in the Great Depression and revolves around Bean Curry who is the cousin of Turtle. Bean lives in Key West and faces two major struggles; his father left to New Jersey in hopes to find a job and a stranger came to turn his hometown into a tourist destination. #LAE3414sp19

ha_kaye Full of Beans would be best done as a RA since there are references to another time period and harder vocabulary. The link give pre reading, while reading, and post reading activities. I loved how the link had discussion questions for each of the chapters and it included class discussions and pair work. https://images.randomhouse.com/promo_image/9780553510362_3414.pdf 6y
ha_kaye UDL principle 3.1 and EL strategy #4 are a must for Full of Beans. Students need to know what the Great Depression was, who President FDR was, what the New Deal was, and who the New Dealers were to understand the story. 6y

I really enjoyed this historical fiction middle grade novel. I picked it out because it‘s nominated for the William Allen White Children‘s Book Award for next year. Beans is a funny & relatable narrator. The situations he gets into are hilarious to read about. It feels like a good first book for #MiddleGradeMay

I'm not usually a huge fan of historical fiction, but this was great! Super-fast middle grade read set in Key West during the Great Depression. I loved how Holm showed the dire straights the town and residents were in, without being too, well, depressing. Lots of local color included too.

Great follow up to the book Turtle in Paradise. Though set during the Depression I still think kids can relate to the characters. Glad this book came along because I really enjoyed the kids from the first book!
