“I Have a Dream” By Kadir Nelson is an extraordinary NF B book! This book has won two Caldecott awards and the Coretta Scott King Award! Amazing! This book is a fantastic DR or RA book on what MLK believed in. It is a great book to teach young students about Civil rights and can be used in a History Lesson as well. At the end of the book, it has the entire “I Have a Dream” speech by MLK! #ucflae3413su20

Bemelmans was awarded the Caldecott Medal for his classic story of Madeline. This poetry (P) book talks about Madeline the smallest yet bravest girl of them all. Madeline is rushed to the hospital and the other 11 girls parade her with gifts so she can recover. This book is great for a RA and to have students share a time when they were brave!

DrSpalding Remember me saying that not all things that rhyme are poetic. This is an example of that! Madeline would not be poetry but what genre would it be? Excellent resource that aligns with rhyming words. 5y

This nonfiction takes the reader through a mini walk of Martin Luther King, Jr.‘s life. Starting from when he was a little boy and was able to identify and read “white only signs” to when he traveled to Memphis, Tennessee, to help the garbage collectors on strike and was shot and died. The book focuses on the “big words” he used to help change the world and how he used love to fight hate. (1/3) #ucflae3414sp20 #butwaittheresmoretoread

victoriamaria This book can be used as an introductory lesson for prominent figures during the 1950s. It can be used to integrate history lessons. The illustrator‘a style is very unique. The illustrator uses a collage style technique. The illustrator mentions in the note that there are a few symbols throughout the book that represents an event that occurred during that time period. This TL, Caldecott award winning book was written and illustrated by Ludwig Bemelmans. The book is about a young girl who lives with 11 other young girls and taken care of by Miss Clavel. One night Madeline cried and cried and needed to get her appendix out. The girls all missed her and wanted theirs out too. #UCFLAE3414F19

fabozzia I would pair this book with UDL strategy 2.1 because there is a lot of great vocabulary for students to clarify, which aligns with EL strategy 5, to teach technical vocabulary supporting key concepts. I believe this story would be one of the simpler books, in some ways, to incorporate these lessons and strategies. 5y

DrSpalding I love this biography and partner reading could work quite well. Reading this prior to a science lesson about snowflakes and or the winter season would work well. 5y

This RF picture book by Patricia Polacco tells about a girl named Trisha who struggles with dyslexia. Throughout her years in school, everyone was able to read except for her which made her frustrated and thought she was dumb. Kids would make fun of her and not one teacher paid attention to her struggle, until Mr. Falker came along and believed in that she could read. He helped her as much as he could and finally so happily, she was able to read!

sbombasi This book would be great for an AS because this book is actually an autobiography of the author. It‘ll be nice for students to see and research that the author tells about her own personal life similarly through this book she wrote. Here‘s a lesson plan that goes perfectly with an author study activity.

This RF novel by Sharon Draper, is a great story about diversity. This book entails an 11-year-old girl named Isabella who is in the 6th grade. She is half black and half white. She struggles with her identity with being biracial, racial tension among her community, and living with her divorced parents of two separate families that she has to go back and forth to every week. #ucflae3414f19

sbombasi This book is a great LC to discuss many topics like real-life struggles that may be similarly happening with others that they can relate to or bring awareness about different types of families. Having students follow this lesson plan matches perfectly. Distinguishing different roles to each student that they can identify as well.

This biography picture book is an excellent read aloud to introduce students to one of the worlds most influential leaders.The book won the Jane Addams book award for picture books. The book begins with his childhood experience of seeing “white only “signs throughout his hometown, presenting his efforts of the civil rights crusader, and ended abruptly with his assassination.

SofiaRoselli The website provides a great overview of the book, standards, resources and lesson plans. I would teach questioning for clarification, ESOL strategy one, to help students further understand big concepts in the book such as racism. I would also help clarify vocabulary and symbols, 2.1, so students understand prejudice and racism.

This fantasy novel is perfect for an independent reading book in the classroom. For milo, everything‘s a bore. When a tollbooth mysteriously appears in his room, he drives through only because he‘s got nothing better to do. But on the other side, things seem different. Milo visits the Island of Conclusions (you get there by jumping), learns about time from a ticking watchdog named Tock, and embarks on a quest to rescue Rhyme and Reason!

The lesson plan provided gives an activity where students use a diagram to aid in identifying concepts and seeing relationships which covers ESOL strategy 30. Whoever You Are written by Mem Fox and illustrated by Leslie Staub, is a sweet NF book. Children all over the world look different, speak different languages, and live completely different lives, but inside they are all the same❤️ This book should definitely be in classrooms as it promotes love and acceptance! Some parts of the book repeat so it would be great for CR. ESOL strategies 3, 11, & 16 go along with this book. UDL principles 7.2 & 1.2
