Enjoyable
I seem to be in the minority here on Litsy. Another brilliant story from Cixin Liu. Although I was a little disappointed with Ball Lighting, it was extraordinary compared to other current SF. Supernova Era has reached close to the “Remembrance of Earth‘s Past” status for me. I could easily see how this could be its own trilogy. But I hope that it doesn‘t, as this book ends at a perfect place.
Did some #audioplanning this morning! I‘m really happy with how this insect spread turned out.
I made cheeseburger gnocchi for the first time in a while!
Cooking supper took me to 49% with SUPERNOVA ERA. So far, I‘m enjoying it for its How Stuff Works focus, but all my previous experiences with Liu were a mix of super cool and super boring, so I‘ve stayed on my guard. #audiocooking
Radiation from a supernova kills everyone on Earth over the age of 13. Liu's usual weaknesses and strengths are here: flat characters and a preference for exposition over drama, but terrific ideas and a genius for parable. For me this is the weakest of his works available in English, hurt by a section describing a war in Antarctica which spends too much time and attention on children killing each other; and an abrupt, unsatisfying ending.
In those days, Earth was a planet in space.

In the beginning I was enjoying the book very much. It was a promising story... until the adults died... then it just got a little ridiculous, a little too grand... and a lot unbelievable. At first I thought: Ok, a Lord of the Flies scenario on a global scale... cool. But the children didn't act like children. And they definitely didn't talk like children. And there was no way they could have learned so much in such a short period of time. 2.75⭐️s
The novel's story is written from a historian perspective, detailing what happened within the three years of the Supernova Era. The perspective from children during this time I felt was fascinating. Their main challenge was overcoming inertia, and wanting to have fun instead of working. I found myself wondering what I would do at that age. The Epoch Clock left me sitting in silence. The ending was a surprise for me, not what I was expecting.
Thank you Tor Books for this advance reading copy of Supernova Era by Cixin Liu! I read the first look on Bookish First of this terrifying scifi novel and am excited to see where the rest of the story goes! I‘ve heard great things about this author!
