The Loved One
The Loved One | Evelyn Waugh
11 posts | 24 read | 17 to read
Following the death of a friend, the poet and pets' mortician Dennis Barlow finds himself entering the artificial Hollywood paradise of the Whispering Glades Memorial Park. Within its golden gates, death, American-style, is wrapped up and sold like a package holiday-and Dennis gets drawn into a bizarre love triangle with Aime Thanatogenos, a nave Californian corpse beautician, and Mr. Joyboy, a master of the embalmer's art. Waugh's dark and savage satire on the Anglo-American cultural divide depicts a world where reputation, love, and death cost a very great deal.

#BookBinge #InvolvesFuneral This has been on my TBR for years. My friend was downsizing her collection & gave me this copy. The Charles Addams cover illustration makes it even better! #vintage

This book is so silly! A pet mortician gets tangled up with a cosmetician at a funeral home (for humans), who is also kinda mixed up with a much-respected mortician (whose home life is…different…) I don‘t have many warm fuzzies about the funeral industry, so I found this little satire quite funny. I think it takes some jabs at the film industry too, for good measure. I found this at a Little Free Library and thought, “Why not?” Fun little find. ☺️

I didn‘t manage to read my April #doublespin, The Loved One, in April, but I‘m going to try to quickly read it today since it‘s so short.

@Bookwormjillk , you‘re a tea drinker after my own heart! I love a good, strong black tea in the morning and a peppermint tea to perk me up in the afternoon. Thank you so much for your selections! 🤗 #litsyteaswap

Bookwormjillk Yay! Yea twins! 2y
Ruthiella The humor in The Loved One is comically dark and (fittingly) morbid. I‘d only read Brideshead before it and didn‘t know Waugh could be so bitingly funny. 2y
sarahbellum @Bookwormjillk 👯‍♀️ 2y
sarahbellum @Ruthiella I wasn‘t overly impressed by Brideshead when I read it a few years ago, so I‘m hoping The Loved One will redeem Waugh for me 🙃 2y

This is one of those books I was half way through before I realized that, according to GR, I‘d already read back in 2012. 😑 I gave it four stars then and felt similarly now. The funeral industry aspect was hilariously rendered and the story itself was witty. I love Waugh so much.

Just in case anyone wasn‘t sure that this book was made for me- check out the end papers. 😄
(We shall just ignore what happens to the Aimee in the book and meander on our way now, yes?)

LeahBergen And it‘s even spelled the same! 👍🏻 6y
Aimeesue @LeahBergen All the other versions are just spelled wrong. 😂😂😂 6y
Aimeesue @LeahBergen Have just realized that I would never in a million years identify with a character named "Amy." Huh. (edited) 6y

This is the only one I could find on my TBR that really fits for today. Has anyone read it? If yes, what did you think?

rabbitprincess I liked it and think often of rereading it. The edition I read was a Penguin and had a cover illustrated by Quentin Blake. 7y
Nonaroo I thought it was a riot! Enjoy! 7y
batsy No, but now I want to! 7y

A nasty little diversion. Short, mean, and funny.

Hobbinol Okay. I had to stack a book with a character name of Mr. Joyboy. 7y

Currently reading. We went to Hatchard's in London. It has been a bookstore since 1797. This was the novella that they picked as their favorite in past 200 years.

lisamathilda I kept it as it is a souvenir from Hatcherd‘s. I didn‘t care for it however. 6y

I can't separate this film from the book, and the film is certainly weird. #somethingforsept

[DELETED] 2232195534 Is that Liberace by that casket? 8y
MMenefee @kaysreadinglife Yes it is. He's just one of many celebs who star. My favorite is Rod Steiger as Mr. Joyboy, chief embalmer. That character is in the book and film. 8y
Mamashep I'm curiously attached to both of them! 8y
