This week we celebrate the best in the books we read in the past year. It's time for the Book Oscars!! We debate fun categories such as best villain and best scene before announcing the winners for best book, best character, and best author. We love doing this episode!

Also, if you like upcoming book news we have a bit of that in the beginning. Thanks for listening and enjoy!

I can't possibly pick favorites from this list. So random thoughts, instead:

🩵 Up is my favorite movie ever. It warms my icy heart. I cry 3 times during it to this day.
🩵 Philip Seymour Hoffman was one of my favorite actors. I'm so sad he died so young.
🩵 When Pulp Fiction came out, our local art theatre showed it during their Oscar series, and a bunch of elderly ladies who were regulars walked out in disgust. 🤣🫠

dabbe I gulp-sob snot out of my nose every time I watch the opening of UP! 😭 Thanks for playing and sharing. 🩵💙🩵 1w
dabbe Fab score, too! 🤩🤩🤩 1w
lil1inblue @dabbe Yeah, the opening scene is definitely an ugly cry for me, too. 😭 And the score is because the era covers my high school years, when I had a crush on a boy who wanted to become Stanley Kubrick. 😂 He broke my teenaged heart, but he also introduced me to so many good films! 😉 1w
dabbe @lil1inblue At least one good thing came out of it! 🤗 1w

my read for women‘s history month…such a trailblazer—the 1st asian american actress to have a successful career and overcoming discrimination and racism—“…back then anna may wong was the 1st and only today thanks to her struggle she is the 1st of many.” #audiophile #readinggoal #readinglife #womenshistorymonth

The beginning of this year was such a bad reading slump for me! I finally feel like I‘m getting back into my reading groove. I am fascinated by the history of Hollywood and this book is not definitely not disappointing! It‘s amazing how truly small the industry is and all the machinations that go on behind the scenes. I‘ve always found Valley of the Dolls as a book and a movie to be such interesting examples of a moment in time.

TheBookHippie Looks good! 3w
dabbe I adore Sharon Tate. 🩵 3w

Wonderful! I will have to plan an entire day for watching Al‘s 🎥 ‘cause somehow, I‘ve not seen many of them😳

I absolutely love listening to autobiographies/memoirs that are read by the author(s). I‘m always fascinated & intrigued by their life experiences.

MemoirsForMe Agreed! Love when celebs narrate their own books and need to see more Pacino films after this great read. 🙌🏻 4w
DieAReader @MemoirsForMe 💖🎬So many movies to watch!! 4w
CoverToCoverGirl I‘m excited for this one, but my library hold is still several weeks away. 4w

One of Jimmy's first movies was the remake of Seventh Heaven in 1937. I never watched the original. As much as I love Wizard of Oz, my favorites are Katherine Hepburn's Jo in Little Women, Philadelphia Story (Jimmy won Oscar), and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington ❤️❤️❤️. I should've done better, but I only cared for Stewart, Hepburn, or Grant.

LoverOfLearning 2........ ooof. Wizard of Oz And Of Mice and Men. 😲 1mo
MemoirsForMe I saw 14, probably because my mom loved all those Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers musicals…and my husband loves Errol Flynn. I‘m also a big fan of Kate Hepburn and The Philadelphia Story. Boys Town and Lost Horizon are big faves too. 1mo

lauraisntwilder 4. I had no idea there was a version of Romeo and Juliet starring Leslie Howard and Norma Shearer. I can't decide if that sounds amazing or terrible! 1mo

I got so excited reading everyone else's posts that I forgot to post mine! I chose my three favorites. In fact, they're in my top 10 of all time!
In no particular order:
1. CASABLANCA: “Louis, this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.“
2. GONE WITH THE WIND: “After all, tomorrow is another day.“
3. REBECCA: “Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again.“

Thanks to all who played! 🍿❣️📽️

AnnCrystal 👏🏼🥳🎬💝💝💝. 1mo
shortsarahrose I got to see Gone with the Wind at a historic theater just like it would‘ve been seen originally and it was one of the coolest experiences. 1mo

Oscar Wars, by Michael Schulman (2023)

Premise: A history of the Academy Awards told through the stories of several pivotal moments across the decades.

Review: This is a fascinating and generally successful piece of nonfiction. My only struggle with it is the decision to tell the story of the Oscars through long, in-depth vignettes, rather than through a traditional survey. (Cont.)

Mattsbookaday The format has the advantage of really zooming in to specific moments in time, but its disadvantage is that it left me still feeling pretty murky about those parts of the history that were not the focus of any of the chapters. But if you‘re at all interested in cinema or pop culture in general, this is an excellent read.
