Ernest Hemingway on Writing
Ernest Hemingway on Writing | Larry W. Phillips

An assemblage of reflections on the nature of writing and the writer from one the greatest American writers of the twentieth century. Throughout Hemingways career as a writer, he maintained that it was bad luck to talk about writingthat it takes off whatever butterflies have on their wings and the arrangement of hawks feathers if you show it or talk about it. Despite this belief, by the end of his life he had done just what he intended not to do. In his novels and stories, in letters to editors, friends, fellow artists, and critics, in interviews and in commissioned articles on the subject, Hemingway wrote often about writing. And he wrote as well and as incisively about the subject as any writer who ever lived This book contains Hemingways reflections on the nature of the writer and on elements of the writers life, including specific and helpful advice to writers on the craft of writing, work habits, and discipline. The Hemingway personality comes through in general wisdom, wit, humor, and insight, and in his insistence on the integrity of the writer and of the profession itself. From the Preface by Larry W. Phillips

I‘ve been haunted the last month by Ken Burns‘s remarkable documentary on Ernest Hemingway. This was one of the first books I ever bought “on writing” and — for all of Hemingway‘s demons and flaws as a human being — I would not be the writer I am today without it.

marleed I often wish I would have documented for myself how often Earnest Hemingway is mentioned (sometimes even an unexpected supporting character) in books I‘ve read. I‘m sure it‘s more than any other IRL figure and every time makes me stop to consider his influence on writers - and really society. 3y

It was interesting to read about Hemingway's process and his opinions about literature. At times, I grew tired of his arrogance with regard to other writers. He took pot-shots at many of the greats! I felt like asking him who the h*ll he thinks he is! Still, there is no denying his contribution to American literature. #writersonwriting

I have always been drawn to Hemingway's books and his prose, so this book was a treat. It's a compilation of anything he ever wrote on the topic of writing. He has great advice for those of us crazy enough to write for a living: Be true. Listen. Observe. "And get the weather in your god damned book-weather is very important!" He was a stickler for details.?He even lists authors he admired + books he felt every writer must read. Delightful!

tpixie Weather! Lol. Sounds like an awesomely wonderful read! 7y

I'm juggling a few books at the moment:
Audio: I Still Dream about You
Serial Reader: Bram Stoker's Dracula
Hardcover: Oprah
And I just started perusing this Hemingway paperback to counterbalance the Kitty Kelly squalor. 😳

Hemingway is not afraid to tell something like it is, and that includes what it's like to be a writer. This may be my favorite book about writing because it's not a how-to but a glimpse into another writer's soul. It's inspiring and fascinating. A must read for any writer.
