11/22/63: A Novel | Stephen King

(Disclaimer: listened to Audio) Not a typical King thriller, but a real mind game! This is a huge book (long listen) but well worth it! Weaving in real-world history with a bit of fiction and “what could‘ve been” really makes for an intriguing story. I found myself researching names and topics throughout, to learn more about what was true and what was King. And while the ending left me feeling a little disappointed, it is the “right” ending.

(Disclaimer: I listened to Audio) The legend of the ravens at the Tower of London goes back centuries, and this book sheds light on the history and modern day life of the ravens and those who take care of them, as told by the current Ravenmaster. While I am sure the book is splendid (probably has pictures, too), the audio is performed by the author, adding his British accent to the story in a way that written text never can. A quick, fun read.

(Disclaimer: I listened to the Audio) For fans of history, adventure and treasure hunts, this book will capture you. The search for lost WWII planes and crew, with retrospective narrative about what the crews were going through at the time of being lost. The writing was clear and concise, with a storyline that was hard to turn off.

A bit predictable but entertaining, nonetheless. Independent girl falls for rich horse guy who turns out to be nicer than his reputation.

An interesting coming-of-age story of an orphan girl who is sent to college by an anonymous benefactor, whom she is required to write letters to as repayment. The entire book is a collection of those one-sided letters, revealing a girl-come-woman with a bit of a predictable ending. Reads quickly, and the format makes it easy to pick up and put down in between other tasks.

Disclaimer - I listened to the audiobook. I could not and did not finish this book. The characters were too absurd, the writing felt scattered, and the story did not capture me at all. I couldn‘t even tell you what the plot line was - it was that random.

Disclaimer - I listened to the audiobook. This book was difficult to finish. Yes, it‘s about hockey and other things and is probably a very real story in certain towns, but the writing repeats and repeats and repeats. And the ending was wholly unsatisfying, like a page limit was set and the story needed to end in the next half-page.

Disclaimer - I listened to the audiobook. This one took some time to get used to. The narration changes perspective with each chapter and while “clear”, is sometimes hard to follow what‘s going on. Ultimately, I enjoyed the book, though. Well written and good scene building.

Disclaimer - I listened to the audio. I really wanted to like this book. It is well-written with beautiful prose and descriptive scene building. But there really isn‘t a story line. Chapter to chapter skips decades of time. And how much “story” can there be about a guy trapped in a hotel? Kept waiting for something to “happen” or to tie it all together, but it ends fairly abruptly and anti-climatically. I know others loved it, but I did not.

Disclaimer - I listened to the audiobook. Read this because everyone talked about it when Trump got elected. It was ok. I see the dystopian view of things being portrayed, but also see the faults in how the world collapsed as it did. The writing as a whole was good, with just enough details to paint the world.

Disclaimer - listened to the audiobook. For all the rave reviews his book got, I was a bit disappointed. I‘ve read a few other books on similar subject and didn‘t really garner much new from this book. The audio was hard to follow and the text repeats itself a lot, or changes subject fairly quick, seemingly without finishing the previous topic. Maybe I just need to read the text slowly to “get it”.

Disclaimer - I listened to the audiobook. I have mixed feelings about this book. It was more relationship story than science or lab story, which is fine, but I think I expected more of the lab experiment story than it was. The tone of the narration was mostly down and depressing, but maybe reading it would yield a different take. I enjoyed the book but it wasn‘t what I had expected.

(Disclaimer-Listened to audiobook) This was an odd book to listen to. It wasn‘t written for audio, so some of the text-formatting doesn‘t transfer nicely. That said, the story is simple and easy to follow, but given it‘s written for children, it‘s about what was expected.

(Disclaimer: listened to audiobook) this is a beautiful book. The author captures your imagination, painting the scene in your mind and putting you in the story. I felt every emotion out there. laugh. cry. angry beyond words. worry. The narration was outstanding. Now for the bad... none of the reviews I read told me this was a story about domestic violence. Had I known, I would not have read it. I won‘t read it again, but I‘m glad I did once.

The audio added some emotional queues and was really well-done.

Reviewed for a friend, with intent of gifting it to a younger new birder. The info is written in a way that aims at new birders, but is not elementary in itself, meaning that children may not benefit from the information as much as adults. Some concepts will be hard to portray to a child, such as habitat diffs or how bird plumage changes with the seasons. But for what it is, the book is a wealth of information and I will surely buy a copy.

Disclaimer: I listened to the audiobook. This book takes a good look at the lack of adventures in nature in current society and what consequences come with that, listing facts and research and some new efforts to reintroduce humans to nature on a more frequent basis. Very informative, if not dry at times. The audiobook lacks sound level control, the narrator often speaking low enough that I was unable to hear what was being said.

This unique book is full of witty cartoons, portraying different aspects and facts of the natural world in a humorous method. My only real critique is that the book is so small that the cartoons are next to impossible to read. I would‘ve paid extra for a large-format book where I didn‘t need a magnifying glass to read the small cartoon text.

(Disclaimer: listened to the audio) This is my second or third NdT book and I enjoy his writing very much. I also enjoy when he is the narrator of the audiobook, lending his sense of humor and voice inflection to otherwise dry material. This book was not as concise as previously read books, having a few chapters that felt more like filler material rather than important points to be made, but otherwise, very educational and mostly entertaining.

(Disclaimer: listened to the audio) This was an odd book, with a twisting storyline that made you question whether the story was in present time or the past often. There is a note that this started as a short story, which makes the abbreviated story make more sense. While details aren‘t lacking, they aren‘t in excess, either, leaving a lot to the imagination. Certainly not a bad book, but also not one I am rushing to re-read.

Tamra I felt like it was uniquely atmospheric. 6y

Disclaimer: listened to audio. I loved it. While not a gamer, I know enough pop culture to understand the premises. In a crumbling world, society has found refuge in a digital world that blurs reality. The programmer leaves a treasure hunt that will leave the winner the richest, most powerful person ever, so obviously everyone wants to win. Long but well written, worlds are created beautifully, and the action/suspense balanced with the slower.

(Disclaimer: I listened to the audio) I had heard stories about the Hobbit when I hiked through Maine, so this story intrigued me. The author interviewed the Hobbit numerous times, and pieced together the story of how a man can disappear into the woods and live quite comfortably for decades without being discovered. This book comes across as a bit of a cross between Thoreau‘s Walden and a true crime novel. Definitely an interesting read.

(Disclaimer: I listened to the audio) I had read this book last year, and was curious how the audio compared At times, the audio is better, with voices and voice inflections. But at other times, you are “read” what a picture says, instead of seeing the sketch, which loses some of the effect. This is a good story, but knowing how it ends made it slightly less dramatic than the first time reading through it.
