Untethered
Untethered | Julie Lawson Timmer
When Char Hawthorn's husband dies unexpectedly, she is left questioning everything she once knew to be true: from the cozy small town life they built together to her relationship with her stepdaughter, who is suddenly not bound to Char in any real way. Untethered explores what bonds truly form a family and how, sometimes, love knows no bounds. Char Hawthorn, college professor, wife and stepmother to a spirited fifteen-year-old daughter, loves her family and the joyful rhythms of work and parenting. But when her husband dies in a car accident, the step in Chars title suddenly matters a great deal. In the eyes of the law, all rights to daughter Allie belong to Lindy, Allies self-absorbed biological mother, who wants to girl to move to her home in California. While Allie begins to struggle in school and tensions mount between her and Char, Allies connection to young Morgan, a ten-year-old-girl she tutors, seems to keep her grounded. But then Morgan, who was adopted out of foster care, suddenly disappears, and Char is left to wonder about a possible future without Allie and what to do about Morgan, a child caught up in a terrible crack in the system. From the Hardcover edition.

Fresh look on blended families and what makes family. Char, dealing with the grief of her husband's death must come to terms with the fact she no longer is step mother to Allie. With no parental rights she and Allie live in limbo while Allies biological mother makes space for the girl in her life. Allie befriends Morgan who has been in foster care. When Morgan disappears and Allie chases after her, Char learns what it means to be a mother.

I don't remember the last time I bailed on a book after 15 pages. From page 1, the characters were flat and the dialogue was stiff. Then someone entered a scene, and someone said aloud to her BEST FRIEND, "Oh that's Morgan, she's from those meetings every Monday at 2pm at the high school and she's friends with Allie who is my daughter." Nope, that's not how you introduce a character. Saturday's too short for that nonsense.

bookishkai Oh boy. I have this in my TBR pile, now I'm kind of regretting the purchase. There's nothing worse than poor writing. 8y
ErikasMindfulShelf Oh no. I liked her previous book 8y

MyNamesParadise Oh goodness is this going to be another author I'm going to have to berate on Twitter? I had to go after B.A. Paris who wrote Behind Closed Doors because it was the definition of crappy writing AND storytelling! I was looking forward to Untethered. Oh well. 8y
katrrosee @bookishkris @irre It could have just been me being picky and grumpy! The premise from the cover seems like a great story, but I'm just coming off a whole series of excellent books so my expectations are high now. 8y
katrrosee @MyNamesParadise I've only heard good things about Behind Closed Doors! But I'm not much of a thriller gal. Bad writing is the saddest way to kill a great story idea. :( 8y
MyNamesParadise @KatrinaRose the 1st day in Intro to Creative Writing I was taught to not justify over the top characters or plot elements by saying "well I know of people or situations in real life like this". Good writing would make it seem plausible/believable. Look at Gillian Flynn! Her books are out there twisted but her books are believable! 8y
Taylor @MyNamesParadise I'd call the second half of Gone Girl anything but believable. 8y

Have spent the whole last week of my summer break painting and cleaning. I'm finally taking a few minutes to start Untethered. Don't know much about it at this point, but I'm hoping it is a nice, relaxing read.

[DELETED] 2232195534 I thought it sounded good. Will be interested in what you think! 😀 8y

I absolutely loved this author's first book, Five Days Left, so I was very excited when this one was published. Alas, I did not enjoy it nearly as much. I found it to be full of frustrating and one-dimensional characters as well as completely implausible situations. That said, I did finish the book so it wasn't all bad. Just disappointing.

Another title for my weekend reading. Explores the meaning of family and parenting in terms of step-families and widowhood.

ErikasMindfulShelf I really liked Five Days Left. Can't wait to read this. 8y

Pretty decent book. Death, parenting and adoption issues are front and center. I know two families that have adopted children and the children are now with another family. Very heartbreaking.

“A child desperate for love from the woman who didn‘t want to be her mother, and not interested at all in love from the woman trying as hard as she can to be exactly that."
I'm having some feelings while reading this one. We'll see how it goes; I'm about half way.

I was stunned by all the topics introduced into this book. Exploring the dynamics of being a step parent to a child after the loss of their primary biological parent, and the lack of involvement of the other biological parent AND the flaws in the child welfare system. Written so well into a story!

BooksForEmpathy I haven't heard of it but I want to read this now! Thanks for your review! 8y

Julie Lawson Timmer is coming to the bookstore next month...getting a jump on her new novel, Untethered!

Bakingbookworm I'm starting this book today. I adored Five Days Left and was so happy to meet Julie when she was on tour promoting her book here in Ontario. How are you liking it so far? 9y
