Satantango | László Krasznahorkai, George Szirtes

From the winner of the 2015 Man Booker International Prize At long last, twenty-five years after the Hungarian genius László Krasznahorkai burst onto the scene with his first novel, Satantango dances into English in a beautiful translation by George Szirtes. Already famous as the inspiration for the filmmaker Béla Tarr’s six-hour masterpiece, Satantango is proof, as the spellbinding, bleak, and hauntingly beautiful book has it, that “the devil has all the good times.” The story of Satantango, spread over a couple of days of endless rain, focuses on the dozen remaining inhabitants of an unnamed isolated hamlet: failures stuck in the middle of nowhere. Schemes, crimes, infidelities, hopes of escape, and above all trust and its constant betrayal are Krasznahorkai’s meat. “At the center of Satantango,” George Szirtes has said, “is the eponymous drunken dance, referred to here sometimes as a tango and sometimes as a csardas. It takes place at the local inn where everyone is drunk. . . . Their world is rough and ready, lost somewhere between the comic and tragic, in one small insignificant corner of the cosmos. Theirs is the dance of death.” “You know,” Mrs. Schmidt, a pivotal character, tipsily confides, “dance is my one weakness.”

I‘ve wanted to watch this film adaptation of Satantango since I found out about it a few years ago. It is indeed mesmerizing. I‘ll see if I can get through the full 7.5 hours before my rental expires. 😬

vivastory Is it directed by Bela Tarr? 3y
sarahbarnes @vivastory yes it is! I haven‘t seen any of his other work I don‘t think, but this was phenomenal. 3y
vivastory The only Tarr I have watched is Werckmeister Harmonies. I saw it years ago but it always stuck with me. It's an adaptation of 3y
sarahbarnes @vivastory What?!! I didn‘t know that existed! But I also loved Melancholy of Resistance and now I am going to have to watch this one, too. Thanks for the tip! (edited) 3y

I can‘t help being dazzled by Krasznahorkai‘s maddening long sentences and meticulously descriptive observations

“He gazed sadly at the threatening sky,at the burned-out remnants of a locust-plagued summer, and suddenly saw on the twig of an acacia,as in a vision, the progress of spring, summer, fall and winter,as if the whole of time were a frivolous interlude in the much greater spaces of eternity, a brilliant conjuring trick to produce something apparently orderly out of chaos,to establish a vantage point from which chance might begin to look like necessity”

After being blown away by the originality, existential density and psychological complexity of Krasznahorkai‘s “The Last Wolf” and “Herman”, I can‘t wait to start reading this one from the 2015 Man Booker International Prize winner.

Pickpick

This was, mildly put, strange. It takes some time to get used to the writing, the lack of explanations, the confusion of it all, but the book eventually did grow on me. I had, however, expected something more to happen by the end. I expected more passages as disturbing as that of Estike and Micur!

This book is DENSE and hard to focus on, but I believe it will be very good. It reminds me of Magda Szabo's writing: long, convoluted sentences that require focus and that are probably a nightmare to translate. It calls for fiery candy that non-Scandinavians rarely appreciate 😄

Kalalalatja Tyrkisk peber!!! Yaasssssss! Love them 😋😋 (edited) 7y
MicheleinPhilly I love them!!!!! Any time a relative comes to visit we ask them to buy us bags and bags. 7y
Aninski My ex-boyfriend, who's Norwegian, had a lot of fun pranking my family in Brazil with those. We had never heard of candy that isn't sweet, so you can imagine everyone's shock 🤢🤢 7y

I'm impressed. How did this typo slip through and end up on the dust cover of the hardcover edition?

ValerieAndBooks What word is it in English? Yes, surprising a typo would be on the cover! 7y
tricours @ValerieAndBooks it should be "fra" (from) 7y
