This starts out as #ANationOfThieves. Charlie is a 13 y/o boy living on the streets of London (1889), he knows quite a lot of thieving tricks. Charlie also is an 18 y/o girl, who is the last necromancer in the UK, and hides as a boy in the slums.

Mostly enjoyable read with an interesting premise and heroine, in the first part. Somewhere around the last third or so (as other reviewers have noted), it feels like this book changed focus. The heroine turned wishy washy, the author introduced a totally unnecessary romantic twist, and the plot seemed to turn into Frankenstein fanfic. Confusing.
This is a pick for the first two thirds, which introduced me to an interesting world via the sort of clear prose that practically reads itself. I liked these characters and I liked the mysteries surrounding the Ministry of Curiosities.
Things did fizzle for me throughout the last third, though. My attention waned as Archer shoehorned in a romantic subplot. I don‘t like how she handled adoption issues, either, and I‘m iffy on the villain. Oh well.
Gonna push on through to the end of this tonight, even though I don‘t have a firm deadline anymore. I‘ve already decided I won‘t take advantage of the series sale. I‘m enjoying the book, but I don‘t love the characters so much that I‘m desperate to spend more time with them, and with the Children‘s Hospital Book Market coming up soon I want to be even pickier than usual about what I add to La TBR.
Delicious leftovers + yet another book I like but CANNOT seem to sit down and read. Blah. I‘d better pick up the pace; I plucked this one off La TBR because the first series omnibus is on sale at Kobo until tomorrow and I want to see if I should buy it.
Ok, I have to admit that I had wildly underestimated this book and started it just to have something to read while out of the house that wouldn‘t distract me from my paper books once I got home. Cue book karma, where I abandoned my “main” reads to finish this 😬 So now I‘m getting ready to buy the sequel, despite a huge TBR (both on my shelves and on my kindle, not to mention the ones I haven‘t even bought yet 😶)
Yes I bought this just because of the dress. #litsyconfessions @RealLifeReading #thebacksofwomen #marchintoreading
