But when one theft too many gets her arrested, her only means of escape lies with a dead man. Charlie hasn't raised a spirit since she first discovered she could do so five years ago. That time, her father banished her. This time, she brings even more trouble upon herself. People are now hunting Charlie all over London, but only one man succeeds in capturing her. Lincoln Fitzroy is the mysterious head of a secret organization on the trail of a madman who needs a necromancer to control his newly "made" creatures. There was only one known necromancer in the world - Charlotte - but now there appears to be two. Lincoln captures the willful Charlie in the hopes the boy will lead him to Charlotte. But what happens when he discovers the boy is in fact the young woman he's been searching for all along? And will she agree to work for the man who held her against her will, and for an organization she doesn't trust? Because Lincoln and his ministry might be just as dangerous as the madman they're hunting. C.J. Archer is the author of the bestselling Emily Chambers Spirit Medium and Freak House series. If you love historical novels with mystery, romance and a paranormal twist, THE LAST NECROMANCER is for you. It's the first book in the MINISTRY OF CURIOSITIES series. This starts out as #ANationOfThieves. Charlie is a 13 y/o boy living on the streets of London (1889), he knows quite a lot of thieving tricks. Charlie also is an 18 y/o girl, who is the last necromancer in the UK, and hides as a boy in the slums.

wanderinglynn Oh no! I hope you feel better soon! 💚 5y
julesG @wanderinglynn Thanks! It's only No.378 (or so) this year. Feels like I only was cold/hay-fever free for one week in September. 5y

julesG @Oryx Thanks. The project is finished, I have the next one on the needles. Cold is still on, or I've developed an addiction to decongestant nasal spray. Anyway, I'm enjoying the time I'm spending with the knitting needles. 😁 5y
Oryx @julesG I'm hoping to finish my Aran jumper this weekend. Only been 3 months!! 5y

Mehso-so

Mostly enjoyable read with an interesting premise and heroine, in the first part. Somewhere around the last third or so (as other reviewers have noted), it feels like this book changed focus. The heroine turned wishy washy, the author introduced a totally unnecessary romantic twist, and the plot seemed to turn into Frankenstein fanfic. Confusing.

Pickpick

This is a pick for the first two thirds, which introduced me to an interesting world via the sort of clear prose that practically reads itself. I liked these characters and I liked the mysteries surrounding the Ministry of Curiosities.

Things did fizzle for me throughout the last third, though. My attention waned as Archer shoehorned in a romantic subplot. I don‘t like how she handled adoption issues, either, and I‘m iffy on the villain. Oh well.

Patchshank I've had this book for awhile, but I haven't read it yet. I'm glad to hear it's at least pretty good. 6y

Gonna push on through to the end of this tonight, even though I don‘t have a firm deadline anymore. I‘ve already decided I won‘t take advantage of the series sale. I‘m enjoying the book, but I don‘t love the characters so much that I‘m desperate to spend more time with them, and with the Children‘s Hospital Book Market coming up soon I want to be even pickier than usual about what I add to La TBR.

Delicious leftovers + yet another book I like but CANNOT seem to sit down and read. Blah. I‘d better pick up the pace; I plucked this one off La TBR because the first series omnibus is on sale at Kobo until tomorrow and I want to see if I should buy it.

Ok, I have to admit that I had wildly underestimated this book and started it just to have something to read while out of the house that wouldn‘t distract me from my paper books once I got home. Cue book karma, where I abandoned my “main” reads to finish this 😬 So now I‘m getting ready to buy the sequel, despite a huge TBR (both on my shelves and on my kindle, not to mention the ones I haven‘t even bought yet 😶)

emmaturi It is always the same! 7y
