Back in print after a decade, Brokedown Palace is a stand-alone fantasy in the world of Steven Brust's bestselling Vlad Taltos novels.Once upon a time...far to the East of the Dragaeran Empire, four brothers ruled in Fenario:King Laszlo, a good man—though perhaps a little mad; Prince Andor, a clever man—though perhaps a little shallow; Prince Vilmos, a strong man—though perhaps a little stupid; and Prince Miklos, the youngest brother, perhaps a little—no, a lot-stubborn.Once upon a time there were four brothers—and a goddess, a wizard, an enigmatic talking stallion, a very hungry dragon—and a crumbling, broken-down palace with hungry jhereg circling overhead. And then...

We start 2021 with cookie pie, the last of the espresso, and the Steven Brust novel I‘ve apparently hoarded for four months. Oops.

Pickpick

The Palace is falling apart; the King and his three brothers are at odds what to do with it. The youngest brother journeys to Faery to seek his path, and finds an enigmatic talking horse as a guide. The Palace is an allegory: the house divided against itself, the old that stands in the way of the new, the death that must occur for new life to begin. The writing is haunting, and the little folk tales are gems throughout. Highly recommended.

First library haul in a couple weeks. I‘ve been pretty careful about my hold suspensions so I don‘t end up saddled with an enormous stack of novels again, and I‘ll have to be even more cautious now they‘ve switched the lending period back to 21 days. This lot‘s due before my last haul. Weird.

But yeah; I got some poetry, a bit more Steven Brust, the start of a Fumi Yoshinaga series, and a DVD. Nothing that‘ll take me ages to finish (I hope).

I'm looking at picking up a car payment and cutting out all extras including Audible. Anyone have any recommendations for good listens so I can use my 3 credits wisely???? Thanks! 🤗🤗🤗🤗

TheSpineView Depends on the genre. I love the Illuminae series 9n Audio it was better than the books 5y
WhatThePuck @TheSpineView I can do SciFi. I'll add as a possible. Thanks! 5y
RamsFan1963 If you like non-fiction, I highly recommend Accessory To War by Neil deGrasse Tyson and I Want My MTV (which I'm currently listening to) by Rob Tannebaum & Craig Marks 5y

BridgetteM I highly recommend Born a Crime. 5y
bookaholic1 A little life 5y
brittanyreads I‘ve heard great things about Sadie on audio. I am also currently listening to And Then There Were None narrated by Dan Stevens and it‘s great! 5y
Soubhiville Looking at your TBR, I‘d go with The Ocean at the end of the Lane, And Tell the Wolves I‘m Home. 5y
Soubhiville Richard Kadrey is also fun on audio. If you haven‘t heard Trevor Noah on audio, that‘s the best way to do 5y
shadowspeak17 My bf highly recommends 5y
Lisaw13 Born a Crime definitely and I loved the Themis series on audio too 5y
Swe_Eva Anything read by Stephen Fry - there‘s a complete Sherlock Holmes that‘s really great, if that‘s of interest. Also, the Audible Dracula with Alan Cumming, Tim Curry, Simon Vance, etc. is spectacular. 5y
GirlNamedJesse I would listen to Neil Gaiman read the phone book, so any of his self-narrated titles would be fine choices. 😊 5y
Whimsical.Curiosity @GirlNamedJesse you and be both! @WhatThePuck seriously anything Neil Gaiman but especially Norse Mythology and/or Coraline. 5y
WhatThePuck @Whimsical.Curiosity I haven't had a chance to really look at the great books everyone has suggested, but when I saw the Gaiman suggestion I knew I was going to buy one by him. I have until the 3rd of next month to cancel. 5y

#brokedownpalace Really struggled with this tag so had to rely on Mr and Mrs Google (where would we be without them) and found this standalone Science Fiction / Fantasy book. Not a book I've heard of or read before so sorry for the cheat! 😉

DGRachel Resourceful, not a cheating. 😉 7y
