Have had this on my tbr stack forever and I‘m so glad I finally got to it. Trevor Noah writes so genuinely in his heartfelt recounting of growing up in South Africa. I learned a lot about him and the difficult struggles of those times apartheid being just one of them. What a tale of perseverance and love. Hope he writes more. He is such a bright light!

I love audio books and I am glad I did the audio for this book. Love Mr. Noah's accent and he is a master of impressions. The book was a challenge as it reminds me of what Solomon said in Ecclesiastic. “Nothing is new under the sun.“

This one helped me check off several BINGO squares (ebook, award winner, nonfiction, recommended by library staff - bonus!). This was a very interesting book, and I will definitely recommend it, though the jumping around timeline threw me a bit.

DGRachel I recommend this audiobook to everyone who asks for audio recommendations regardless of what kinds of books they like to read because Noah‘s narration and his story are just that good. 😍 1mo

Trevor freaking Noah, ladies & gentlemen!! A true storyteller, one that can blend humor into the harsh reality of real life. He had me crying laughing & yet I cried so hard. I already love him, but this masterpiece here? It makes you feel like you know him on a deep, familial level. Great work all over. Just wow 😭❤️

Wow! An incredible listen! I especially enjoyed the author's own voice for the narration and was amazed the few times he was speaking in some of the other languages he knows. Trevor Noah's personal stories explore the human spirit and how each individual's private logic has immense influence over one's movement forward. Both sad and inspiring at the same time, this book expanded my world view telling of brutal realities alongside hope.

Sace I need to listen to that one again. I remember him making some great comments about how important knowing other languages can be. I'd love to share it with my students. 2mo

1) HP books are the best audiobooks, but I‘m not sure if I listened to them before or after 2010 & didn‘t want to include re-reads.
2) I forgot about Killers of the Flower Moon & would have replaced When Breath Becomes Air with it on my NF list. On audio, it‘s a jolt when the narrator changes due to his death.
3) I listened to 9/10 of the Heroes of Olympus series, esp on some long trips, so I included it as a series.
4) I like accents. 👇

Scochrane26 No 1 ladies‘ detective agency & The Crazy Rich Asians series both have narrators who do multiple accents. Loved the accents for the others. I liked listening to Carrie Fisher‘s voice (rip) & what she had to say in Shockaholic. And Born a Crime is amazing with Trevor‘s voice. It caused me to start listening to the daily show-I love his accent & ability w/ other languages. And Gabrielle Union had important subjects to think about in her book. @Cinfhen (edited) 2mo
4thhouseontheleft I had never thought to listen to the audiobooks of No 1 Ladies Detective Agency. That is a series I stopped reading but mean to go back to at some point. I may try it on audio! 2mo

Scochrane26 @4thhouseontheleft I used to get them on cd at the library, but now I don‘t have CD player in the car. I may return to the series next year, I think I‘ve listened to 6-8 of them. 2mo
Cinfhen I love accents too!!! I really much prefer audio to physical books as I get older and my eyes start to feel weaker. Geez, I sound like a crotchety old grandma 👵 Thanks for sharing your list❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️ 2mo

So many good, thought provoking things about this book. I have been reading more bios (often of comedians for whatever reason) and although they are often enjoyable they are usually pretty light reads. This, however, had some depth, history, and humor to it.

4⭐️ This book is many things at once: a biography, a love letter to his mother, commentary on race and identity, and history lesson. All these heavy subjects are interweaved with humor. Noah‘s perspective as an African who went through Apartheid and his experiences with race in America are interesting and shed light on many similarities and some differences in the black experience in South Africa and America. This book makes you laugh and think.

Wow! Just wow. I knew what apartheid was and knew it was terrible but since it ended around the time I graduated from high school, I never REALLY comprehended what it was like for those living under it. Noah‘s book on his life & growing up under apartheid was just so eye opening to me. What he had to overcome was just insane. Audio book performed by the author was riveting—finished it in just a few days. Adult read: language, situational

Kimberlone I highly recommend his comedy special which treads a lot of the same ground as the book. The story about his parents and his mom is really amazing 3mo

This is a fast read, with a brilliant structure that contextualises each as-it-happens chapter of memoir with a broader view of life in SA.

Side note: I really hate the new thing of paperback editions being scaled down versions of the hardback rather than re-set. Your nice serif font is too damn small now!
