The Glass Cell
The Glass Cell | Patricia Highsmith
4 posts | 2 read | 5 to read
At last back in print, one of Patricia Highsmith's most disturbing works. Rife with overtones of Dostoyevsky, The Glass Cell, first published forty years ago, combines a quintessential Highsmith mystery with a penetrating critique of the psychological devastation wrought by the prison system. Falsely convicted of fraud, the easygoing but naive Philip Carter is sentenced to six lonely, drug-ravaged years in prison. Upon his release, Carter is a more suspicious and violent man. For those around him, earning back his trust can mean the difference between life and death. The Glass Cell's bleak and compelling portrait of daily prison lifeand the consequences for those who live itis, sadly, as relevant today as it was when the book was first published in 1964.

Pickpick

Yay! My first read for the year. The blurb which says it‘s “rife with overtones of Dostoyevsky,..” had me picking this up. It seems to be partly based on a true story from letters Highsmith exchanged with a prison inmate. A suspenseful, psychologically disturbing story with an unlikeable protagonist I can‘t help having sympathy for, in fact I was rooting for him. The building up of suspense brings an unexpected ending that leaves me unsettled.

An innocent man is sentenced to prison for a crime he didn't commit. After he serves his time, he returns to his family, but he's a changed man. It's a really heavy story, one of Highsmith's best.

erzascarletbookgasm Oh I have this on my tbr. Good to know. 2y

I think Patricia Highsmith has to be the best of American writers, Ripley is of course the greatest villain and i loved Carol. Here are my next two PH bks waiting to be read, my gr rating of carol, and the title bk is one i read recently. And don't forget strangers in a train
A prolific writer and when the psychological thriller is being hailed as the new genre it makes you want to shout read Patricia Highsmith
