The Turn of the Screw & In the Cage
The Turn of the Screw & In the Cage | Henry James
8 posts | 11 read | 12 to read
This Modern Library Paperback Classics edition brings together one of literature's most famous ghost stories and one of Henry James's most unusual novellas. In The Turn of the Screw, a governess is haunted by ghosts from her young charges past; Virginia Woolf said of this masterpiece of psychological ambiguity and suggestion, We are afraid of something unnamed, of something, perhaps, in ourselves...Henry James...can still make us afraid of the dark. In his rarely anthologized novella In the Cage, James brings his incomparable powers of observation to the story of a clever, rebellious heroine of Britain's lower middle class. Hortense Calisher, in her Introduction, calls it a delicious story, the more so because it confounds what we expect from James.

For #faceyourfears challenge I picked one book to represent the whole horror genre. Just not for me 😱

AlaMich I couldn't get past the never ending sentences!! Run-on much? 7y
MayJasper @AlaMich ☺ not much to recommend it then. A horror story and horrifically long sentences. Definitely not for me. Thanks for the tip. 7y
booksandsympathy Those run-on sentences were horrible! Many of them were so long and had so much punctuation, I had to read them several times to figure out their meaning. Some of them I couldn't figure out. I just bailed on this one 7y

#UnreliableNarrators
The Turn of the Screw is narrated by a governess who finds herself being haunted by ghosts from her charges past ... or is she simply mad?

Update on #ghostsoflitsy ! Hopefully everyone is enjoying reading along for #scaretober - here is our schedule for the next two stories and our first novel! You can also join in using our hashtags and our ongoing discussion of A Warning to the Curious. Remember, we're doing this through the 22nd of December! #rhymes

tjwill Is this when you are going to discuss them? Or begin them? Just wondering, because I'm planning on Turn of the Screw as my next Serial, but haven't started it yet. 8y
brendanmleonard @tjwill it's when we were planning on discussing them, but if you use the hashtag, you can jump in anytime! 8y

My love of reading is pretty much equal to my love of sports (which everyone around me has trouble believing 😂)... Brought a book tonight, but did not need to take it out of my bag 👍🏻
