The Legend of Sleepy Hollow | Washington Irving

Very readable & short classic for fall. Ichabod Crane is over his heels trying to woo the local farm girl & beat out her normal suitor Brom Bones. In Sleepy Hollow, however, there's also the mysterious ghost of a Headless Horseman. Irving's prose is stellar—some of the best descriptions I've read in a while & often hilarious. He's got quite a sarcastic streak. Loved reading the original rendition of this oft-told tale & glad I finally did! 🎃🐎🍂

Megabooks @BookishFeminist Yes, but my phone is pretty small, and they don't have it for Kindle tablets. It's a little hard to enjoy ☹️️ I'm really happy in SC and at my job especially! I love doing research all day. I'm indulging my nerdy side. 🤓🤓 It's wonderful to be using my degree and mind in a different way. I haven't made any friends yet, but fingers crossed. I'm in the marketing aisle, so most of the people near me are more extroverted. 7y

RebL My hometown middle schools were named after poets. The Irving kids were dark, mysterious and cool. 7y

SaturnDoo I reread this a couple of weeks ago...haven't read it since high school but enjoyed it. I think the audio for it is on Librivox☺ 7y

The friends will come. 😀 Having extroverts around helps a lot with that- as much as I side eye them when I just want my alone time, lol. At least the online ones can tide you over until then now that you sound more settled- that's helped me a lot in the past! 7y

SaturnDoo @BookishFeminist it is a website where volunteers read books that are in the public domain. Not all narators are good but a lot of them are. Fun,free way to listen to a lot of the classics if you want ☺ 7y

SaturnDoo @BookishFeminist Yes do check them out. I enjoy Librivox and Serial Reader. A lot of the classics, especially some of the shorter,lesser known works that I couldn't find, I was able to listen to through Livrivox. I recommend everybody to go and take a peek 😊 7y

Slade House | David Mitchell

At first I felt like I was reading a new author, and I was a bit off kilter and it was CREEPY. By the end, it was pure David Mitchell shining through. All the metaphysics you've come to expect and ten times the horror! Creepiest (did I say creepy?) twins ever, and likeable victims made this sad, frightening, and atmospheric. It would make a great film if I weren't afraid someone would totally ruin it. #scaretober #ghostsoflitsy

MMenefee I've read suggestions that the governess is an unreliable narrator. This would assume the individual telling her story is reliable. 8y

PurpleyPumpkin I enjoyed my reread of this novel. This time, I "read" the audiobook and I think it enhanced the building tension of the story. And the ending, wow! Totally unexpected!! 8y

I have stolen a few minutes to start this, and while I'm just into the second chapter, it is CREEPY. More so than I expected, but a pleasant surprise. YOU GUYS. This was incredible. Loved all of the references to his Dad's books. Loved the characters, especially Vic. Charlie Manx reminds me so much of Kurt Barlow from 'Salem's Lot and the two stories had a remarkably similar feel. Perfect book for this time of year! #scaretober #ghostsoflitsy
