Jamilia's husband is off fighting at the front. She spends her days hauling sacks of grain from the threshing floor to the train station in their small village in the Caucasus, accompanied by Seit, her young brother-in-law, and Daniyar, a sullen newcomer to the village who has been wounded on the battlefield. Seit observes the beautiful, spirited Jamilia spurn men's advances, and wince at the dispassionate letters she receives from her husband. Meanwhile, undeterred by Jamilia's teasing, Daniyar sings as they return each evening from the fields. Soon Jamilia is in love, and she and Daniyar elope just as her husband returns.

A quiet love story - the one that approaches quietly. The short novella was a good read and my heart was twisted by the emotional way the central Asia landscape was described.
Read for #readingasia2021 for #Kyrgyzstan

BarbaraBB I liked this one too. 3y

#BookReport 01/21

Look at this nice color scheme 💕. I had a great reading week and was happy to make a start with the new reading challenges. Three out of four books were set in Japan (incidentally) and the tagged one in Kyrgyzstan. I am so looking forward to #ReadingAsia2021! Also I‘ve found #TheStorygraph this week, which is a cool site and app by itself, but also a great place to keep track of reading challenges (thanks to @Hestapleton 🤍).

Kalalalatja Loving the colours 💕 and I really need to check out Storygraph! Seeing everyone‘s posts has made me curious 3y
TrishB Great pic and colour scheme ❤️ 3y
JennyM Great reading week! I will have to have a look at Storygraph, too. 👍 3y

Cinfhen Stunning photo 💕and looks like a wonderful set of books 🥰I just started playing with storygraph but I haven‘t gotten very far yet 3y
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen I think I found you there. I will answer your email shortly (need my laptop!) but I think a reminder of our buddyread is perfect. You want me up do that or are you posting? 3y
squirrelbrain Gorgeous photo! 3y

Velvetfur Ok I've now checked out StoryGraph and created an account, I like it so far so thanks for mentioning it! 👍🏻 3y
BarbaraBB @Velvetfur Found you! 3y
Megabooks Glad you had a great reading week! ❤️❤️ 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen and @Velvetfur found you both on storygraph. I have the same handle if you want to follow me. 3y
Velvetfur @BarbaraBB @Megabooks ummm, how do I see who's following me, or how do I look for you? I can't work it out! 🤔 3y
Velvetfur @BarbaraBB @Megabooks I mean I've found 'community' but the little magnifying glass for 'search' doesn't do anything when I click on it, and I can't see any way of seeing who's following me 🤔 3y
Megabooks @Velvetfur you can‘t see who is following you, but if you go to the community tab in the pull down menu there is a separate search bar for handles. I‘ve heard that you can see who‘s following you because they don‘t want it to become competitive. 3y
Velvetfur @Megabooks Ah I see, well that's a good idea, trying to make social media a bit less toxic 😊 I've found you now, turns out it just takes an age for the search magnifying glass to load when I tap on it! Found @BarbaraBB too 👍🏻 Thank you for your help! 💜 3y
emilyhaldi I love a good color scheme 😍 3y
QuintusMarcus Cool color scheme - and I‘ve signed on with Story Graph too! 3y
Cinfhen I‘ll have to play around with storygraph @Megabooks but I‘m definitely going to follow add you and all the other Littens!! It‘s a great platform from what I can see 3y

When the wounded soldier Daniyar arrives in the #Kyrgyzstan village, everything changes. His songs of love, the earth and the steppe are in sharp contrast with the circumstances under which the people in the village live and work. His songs are mesmerizing to those who listen. The narrator does and so does Jamilia. A beautiful love story.

A short novella from an author from Kyrgyzstan regarding the unpredictable nature of love. Without being sentimental, this sweet romance sang a song of the heart, which we could all use a little of right now.

Texreader This is so awesome! There‘s going to be a #readingasia2021 challenge and this‘ll work for #Kyrgyzstan @librarybelle @BarbaraBB 3y

This is wonderful - a love story, but not just romantic love. It conveys love of nature, of art, of family, of music, of life itself. What a beautiful, moving and lyrical book. Highly recommended!
