Good Liar
Good Liar | Nicholas Searle
"A superb thriller and a truly engrossing read."--Ruth Ware, New York Times bestselling author of In a Dark, Dark Wood and The Woman in Cabin 10When Roy meets a wealthy widow online, he can hardly believe his luck. Just like Patricia Highsmith's Tom Ripley, Roy is a man who lives to deceive--and everything about Betty suggests she's an easy mark. He's confident that his scheme to swindle her will be a success. After all, he's done this before.Sure enough, Betty soon lets Roy move into her beautiful home, seemingly blind to the web of lies he's woven around her. But who is Roy, really? Spanning almost a century, this stunning and suspenseful feat of storytelling interweaves the present with the past. As the clock turns back and the years fall away, long-hidden secrets are forced into the light. Some things can never be forgotten. Or forgiven.

hmm... I‘m not exactly sure how I felt about this, not a fan of war settings so perhaps I wouldn‘t have read it had I realised how much of it was war-flashback chapters. I did like it a fair amount overall and it was cleverly written but the chronology confused me and the plot seems really rather far fetched. I can definitely think of several ways I would have preferred it to have been structured. 2.5⭐️

about a quarter of the way through this one, enjoying it so far (although finding the writing style a little difficult at times) I think Marco approves🐱

the floating bookshelf of TBR! first up... The Good Liar

I have recently redownloaded Litsy after a long break and I think many of those that I am following no longer use the app :( so please tag your favourite Litsy friends below👇🏼 as I am in need of some new people to follow to brighten up my feed! thank you✨

MaggieCarr I spend hours and hours going though all my Litsy connections during Christmas break, purging any that didn't post book reviews bit rather played games, or hadn't updated their page in at least 4 weeks. It took forever but I see a lot more quality content and I don't feel bad for having low follower/following numbers. Good luck! 5y
ramblingsofareader @MaggieCarr thank you!! unfortunately my app seems to have a bug as everything shows up as “10yr +” for the time for me, even the comment you just posted! so struggling to work out who‘s active! 5y

Pickpick

An elderly couple meet through an internet dating site, but all is not what it seems.

An enjoyable cat and mouse game where you are not sure at first who is the cat and who is the mouse. It's much less violent than the film with the man more of a conman and opportunist and not so much of a thug.

Enjoyable read. Clever twists and turns, but too many ideas that didn‘t quite come together for me- part con man caper, part historical fiction, part twisty thriller, part unreliable narrator character study. I liked the reverse unraveling of the story and there was some great writing, but tonally it felt a bit all over the place. It maybe didn‘t help that I‘d seen the movie first (something I wouldn‘t usually do), which had the same issues.

#wintergames #thefilthyanimals. I finished this today as part of the #24B42020 challenge. While it was an unpredictable mystery with lots of twists and unexpected turns, the overall story fell flat for me. The characters were intriguing but at times the relationships far too convoluted to allow for a good flow in the story. Overall I thought the premise of the book was great but the execution was not my cup of tea. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Andrew65 A good start to the Readathon. 👏👏👏 (edited) 5y

I just couldn‘t get into this book. I don‘t normally start a book and not finish it, but this one wasn‘t for me. I found it hard to follow and it didn‘t hold my attention very well.

Nifflers know this book is gold! I loved the twists and turns. The author circumnavigates around the present by going back and forth in time. This is the literary equivalent of legerdemain: we are sure we can figure out the trick, but it is not until the author reveals the trick late in the book that we truly know the secrets behind the trick.

I‘m curious about the movie with Helen Mirren and Ian McKellen.

Here is the thing. If you need to test your patience, read this book. Slow beginning, sure. Lots of boring parts, inevitable when talking about a couple of old people. But as soon as you start reading the flashbacks, be sure that you have started reading the good parts. If you have been advised to bail on it, don't. Keep reading it until the very end.

108 pages in and I don't care enough about any character to trudge through the plot. I still have no idea what's going on (maybe that's my fault) and sadly I don't find myself caring enough to finish... ☹️

Lillie 100 pages is more than enough of a chance! 9y
Well-ReadNeck Bummer. It has such a promising title! 😜 9y
anwade88 I've read through some GoodReads reviews and they all seem to claim that it's worth the trudge for the final twist, but I'm not sure if I'm up for it. 9y
