9 posts | 7 read | 6 to read
A forgotten enemy. An old adversary. A terrible alliance. From a ruined world at the end of time, the vicious Sild make preparations to conquer the past and rewrite history. But to do it they will need to enslave an intellect greater than their own... On Earth, UNIT is called in to examine a mysterious incident on a North Sea drilling platform. They've hardly begun, though, when something even stranger takes hold: The Brigadier and others are starting to forget about UNIT's highest-profile prisoner. As the Sild invasion begins, the Doctor faces a terrible dilemma. To save the universe, he must save his arch-nemesis... The Master.

Mehso-so

The story was good, but I did find the audio rather long because I have been spoiled with full-cast audio dramas of Doctor Who and am not used to listening to single narrators very often 🤣 It was especially wearying to listen to an older English male narrator impersonating a younger Scottish female character. This might have worked better for me with two narrators. #DoubleSpin June 2021

An entertaining adventure involving the Third Doctor, Jo Grant and The Master. It builds like an old 70s series of Doctor Who, introducing the alien menace, the Sild, having things look very grim as it looks like the aliens are winning, only to have The Doctor save the day with a little time manipulation. 3 💥💥💥 1/2

Alastair Reynolds absolutely nails the dialogue, mannerisms, and general feel of the third Doctor and the Master in this story. I felt like I could picture the actual TV episode in my head as I was reading it.

The original (and still best) Master was played by Roger Delgado and was introduced in Jon Pertwee's second series as an old enemy of the Third Doctor. A recurring presence on Doctor Who until Delgado's tragic death in 1973, the Master was going to be revealed to be the Doctor's brother in Pertwee's last story. The best take on the character I've seen outside the show was in the novel Harvest of Time.

This book completely captures the spirit of the UNIT era. The Third Doctor, Jo Grant, and the Brigadier are written flawlessly, and you can almost hear Roger Delgado delivering his lines as the Master. The plot involves an alien invasion, as was common for the period. Great Classic Who! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
