Almost Like Being in Love
Almost Like Being in Love: A Novel | Steve Kluger
17 posts | 9 read | 1 reading | 16 to read
A high school jock and nerd fall in love senior year, only to part after an amazing summer of discovery to attend their respective colleges. They keep in touch at first, but then slowly drift apart. Flash forward twenty years. Travis and Craig both have great lives, careers, and loves. But something is missing .... Travis is the first to figure it out. He's still in love with Craig, and come what may, he's going after the boy who captured his heart, even if it means forsaking his job, making a fool of himself, and entering the great unknown. Told in narrative, letters, checklists, and more, this is the must-read novel for anyone who's wondered what ever happened to that first great love.

I‘m still packed in storage but I did manage to bring in some LGBTQIA+ books for Pride! Gonna try and tackle these all this month, but it might carry over into July. And I‘ve been itching to do another read of the tagged book. One of my all-time favourites! 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈

This is a really sweet and funny love story about a man's quest to reconnect with his first love after 20 years apart. The structure is unusual, but I enjoyed the multiple POVs from a cast of colourful characters. I think I got most of the popular culture references, but I know virtually nothing about baseball so all of that went completely over my head. Thanks for putting this one on my radar @Reggie

Reggie Yayy, glad you liked it. I loved this book. 4y

Craig and Travis fall in love in high school but go to different unis and drift apart. 20 years later Travis decides there is a big Craig-shaped hole in his life and decides to find Craig again.

This was a fun read that I suspect I would have enjoyed even more if a lot of the sporting and theatre references hadn't gone over my head.

You know when you‘re just looking for a book to make your heart flutter, your smile hurt, and your laugh shake the walls? This is that book. This is a second read for me and I love it. Travis and Craig meet in high school, fall in love but drift apart during college. Twenty years later, Travis realizes his life‘s missing piece is Craig, and begins tracking him down in the hopes of a rekindling of their past feelings. Shenanigans abound.

Sometimes being #RightNexttotheRightOne when you‘re younger makes all the difference in the world later. #SeptemberDanes This part of the book is told by Craig who is with Clayton now but in high school was in love with Travis.

#NuYear Craig is taking a trip down memory lane #downinthepark next to the private school he went to. It‘s been 20 years since he‘s seen his first love, Travis. And even though he is with Clayton, he knows that part of who he is now was forever influenced for the better by Travis. There are so many quirky characters in this book, and a lot of love.

Cathythoughts I like the sound of “quirky characters & lots of love”.... 👍👍✨ 7y
Cinfhen I agree @Cathythoughts love me quirky characters 7y
Reggie @Cathythoughts it‘s a very sweet book about the family we make for ourselves in this world. 7y

This book is quite possibly the gayest book I‘ve ever read. I say that happily and enthusiastically. One book can only hold so many, Auntie Mame, Judy Garland, Ethel Merman references. A jock, Craig, and a nerd, Travis, after falling in love in high school, lose each other after going to different colleges. 20 years later is it in the cards for them? This had me laughing out loud so much but when I wasn‘t looking would punch me in the gut. Pick!!!

I'm starting late, but I'm also terrible at keeping up with these challenges. #booksthatmademesmile was hard, but I narrowed down to this one. I smiled, I laughed, I yelled at it. It is one of the sweetest books I've ever read. I've also paired it with my puppy dog, Ciara, who also makes me smile. ☺️

I bet Travis's Hamilton thing was a lot more ~quirky~ in 2004.
