The Essential Dykes to Watch Out for
The Essential Dykes to Watch Out for | Alison Bechdel
From the author of Fun Home -- the lives, loves, and politics of cult fav characters Mo, Lois, Sydney, Sparrow, Ginger, Stuart, Clarice, and others For twenty-five years Bechdels path-breaking Dykes to Watch Out For strip has been collected in award-winning volumes (with a quarter of a million copies in print), syndicated in fifty alternative newspapers, and translated into many languages. Now, at last, The Essential Dykes to Watch Out For gathers a rich, funny, deep and impossible to put down (Publishers Weekly) selection from all eleven Dykes volumes. Here too are sixty of the newest strips, never before published in book form. Settle in to this wittily illustrated soap opera (Bechdel calls it half op-ed column and half endless serialized Victorian novel) of the lives, loves, and politics of a cast of characters, most of them lesbian, living in a midsize American city that may or may not be Minneapolis. Her brilliantly imagined countercultural band of friends -- academics, social workers, bookstore clerks -- fall in and out of love, negotiate friendships, raise children, switch careers, and cope with aging parents. Bechdel fuses high and low culture -- from foreign policy to domestic routine, hot sex to postmodern theory -- in a serial graphic narrative suitable for humanists of all persuasions.

The audio was good, but the strips themselves are better, especially the jokes in the backgrounds - book titles, newspaper headlines, tee shirt slogans.
And I love that this cover‘s a take on a Norman Rockwell painting. 😁

It was a fun read, and gave me a glimpse into the community I didn‘t get to be part of in my childhood/teens.

I love Bechdel's alternate names for things. Also this is rather ironic considering I bought my book on Amazon!I find it hard to completely condemn it,when it provides so much access to books. No bookshop in India will stock this book, for instance, homosexuality is still a crime punishable by a prison sentence here!

Love this collection of comics selected from 25 years of Dykes to Watch Out For. Of course I had to listen to Ring of Keys from the Fun Home original Broadway cast album while I snapped this photo. Cutest lesbian song ever. #riotgrams #LGBTQpride

rwmg I've got Fun Home on my virtual TBR shelf 7y
VioletBramble @rwmg Fun Home is my favorite Bechdel. Hope you enjoy it. 7y
rwmg I probably won't get to it until at least the end of September when it qualifies as a ROOT 7y

Sometimes Alison Bechdel's autobiographical writing is uncannily close to home

With moments to spare in the #readathon I finished this amazing bind-up of the comic DYKES TO WATCH OUT FOR. The cast of characters are interesting and diverse, and there are some amazing lines throughout! So good!

I have to admit that, despite my best efforts, my concentration powers are dipping very low. I'm starting this 390-page graphic novel compendium now, but may need a nap before finishing.

Better than Fun House: less egoistic, more critical, and didn't take itself seriously as a good comic should be.
