Austentatious
Austentatious: The Evolving World of Jane Austen Fans | Holly Luetkenhaus, Zoe Weinstein
6 posts | 4 read | 7 to read
This book explores online fan spaces in search of "Janeites" all over the world to discover what fans are making, how fans are sharing their work, and why it matters that so many women and nonbinary individuals find a haven not only in Jane Austen, but also in Jane Austen fandom. In relatable chapters based on firsthand experience, the authors explore how Austen fandom has and continues to build communities around women, people of color, and the LGBTQ+ community.

I enjoyed this—a fun, yet also academic exploration of Jane Austen fandom in its many permutations, from films to fanfic. There was some great literary analysis of Austen adaptations (Clueless, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, and the Pemberley Digital series), and the discussion of fandom sparked a lot of thought for me as to how I interact with texts as a fan (beyond just the merch!).

Eyelit I‘m really looking forward to this one - it‘s next in my list to read 😍 5y

It‘s been a long time since I‘ve participated in a photo challenge, and if anything will get me to join in it‘s Jane Austen. 😄
Above is my hopefully achievable #tbr for August. 3 Austen-ish books, 3 book club books, and 3 random for funsies books. I‘m halfway through Middlemarch so there‘s at least one for sure I‘ll finish - we‘ll see if I actually stick to the plan and get to the rest 😂 #AustenInAugust2019

CrowCAH From a swap I got Pride and Prometheus; it looks super good, can‘t wait to delve into it at some point! 5y

A fun yet still academic examination of Austen fan culture. I really appreciated Chapter 2 about the adaptation of Austen‘s Emma into the movie Clueless (total Betty!). Good chapters at the end about Austen and LGBTQ+ themes/ships. It‘s a little short, I would have liked a few more chapters poking into more crevices.

The second chapter in Holly Luetkenhaus and Zoe Weinstein‘s Austentatious (about Austen fan culture) is all about Clueless.

Total Betty 😉 #amreading
