How to Be Sick
How to Be Sick: A Buddhist-Inspired Guide for the Chronically Ill and Their Caregivers | Toni Bernhard
5 posts | 4 read | 12 to read
This book will help and inspire those who must live with the challenges posed by any chronic illnesses, and their caregivers: the relentlessness of symptoms; coming to terms with a life of comparative isolation; weathering fear about the future; facing the judgment of others; dealing with the health care system; and, for a spouse, partner, or other caregiver, adapting to so many unexpected and sometimes sudden life changes. The book begins with the tale of how Toni Berhard got sick and, to her and her partner's bewilderment, stayed sickdetailing all the changes and losses that Toni had to experience as a result of her illness. Toni then goes on to describe how the teachings of the Buddha have taught her the spiritual practice of "how to be sick", meaning how to live a life of equanimity and joy despite her physical and energetic limitations. The chapters in Part Two offer simple practices, ranging from those that are traditionally Buddhist, to others Toni devised after she fell ill, as well as a chapter on the work of Byron Katie, whom Toni has found particularly helpful. The reader need not be a Buddhist to benefit from these practices, or from Toni's inspiring story.

I‘m having one of those days where I can barely walk. All of my joints are screaming in pain. I‘m hunkered down in bed with my book and a bowl of Lucky Charms. Maybe I‘ll try to move around a little bit later, but this is all I can do right now. 🛌 🥣 📚

Starting to feel a little blah - #narcolepsyproblems - so I‘ve retreated to my bed for a rest/nap. So my #booknook pic is my nightstand. And wow, I think my New Year‘s resolution should be to get it a little more organized. #readinthenewyear

LiteraryinPA Hope you get a second wind and feel better! 6y

Notes taken while reading this book. I found it very useful as I try to work through some health issues. It is very definitely Buddhist, though. That works for me quite well, but may be off-putting for some folks.

These are four books I live by. The Historian is an amazing vampire story. How to be Sick is the most calming and empowering book I've ever read about living with chronic illness. The Book of Awakening exudes inspiration and peace. One Hundred Years of Solitude is the book I've called my favorite for the longest. #bookstoliveby #bookriot (wish I was there!)

SharonGoforth Love this! 8y
Texreader I too love The Historian so I must assume I will love your other picks. I'll shall add them to my tbr because unfortunately I too have chronic back pain and could use some words of wisdom given I know I will have this with me the rest of my life. Thank you! 8y

BarbaraTheBibliophage @Texreader Aww. Thanks for trusting me. These are a divergent group, but I hope you love them as much as I do! 8y
Lizpixie I'll have to find a copy of How To Be Sick, though I think I have that bit down to a science!😉 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Lizpixie Yeah, know what you mean. She has an interesting philosophical approach that I appreciated either way. 8y
