The Bastard Brigade
The Bastard Brigade: The True Story of the Renegade Scientists and Spies Who Sabotaged the Nazi Atomic Bomb | Sam Kean
10 posts | 6 read | 12 to read
From New York Times bestselling author Sam Kean comes the gripping, untold story of a renegade group of scientists and spies determined to keep Adolf Hitler from obtaining the ultimate prize: a nuclear bomb Scientists have always kept secrets. But rarely have the secrets been as vital as they were during World War II. In the middle of building an atomic bomb, the leaders of the Manhattan Project were alarmed to learn that Nazi Germany was far outpacing the Allies in nuclear weapons research. Hitler, with just a few pounds of uranium, would have the capability to reverse the entire D-Day operation and conquer Europe. So they assembled a rough and motley crew of geniuses - dubbed the Alsos Mission - and sent them careening into Axis territory to spy on, sabotage, and even assassinate members of Nazi Germany's feared Uranium Club. The details of the mission rival the finest spy thriller, but what makes this story sing is the incredible cast of characters-both heroes and rogues alike-including: Moe Berg the major league catcher who abandoned the game for a career as a multilingual international spy; the strangest fellow to ever play professional baseball. Werner Heisenberg the Nobel Prize-winning physicist credited as the discoverer of quantum mechanics; a key contributor to the Nazi's atomic bomb project and the primary target of the Alsos mission. Colonel Boris Pash a high school science teacher and veteran of the Russian Revolution who fled the Sovit Union with a deep disdain for Communists and who later led the Alsos mission. Joe Kennedy Jr. the charismatic, thrill-seeking older brother of JFK whose need for adventure led him to volunteer for the most dangerous missions the Navy had to offer. Samuel Goudsmit a washed-up physics prodigy who spent his life huntinh Nazi scientist-and his parents, who had been swept into a concentration camp-across the globe. Irne and Frederic Joliot-Curie a physics Nobel-Prize winning power couple who used their unassuming status as scientists to become active members of the resistance. Thrust into the dark world of international espionage, these scientists and soldiers played a vital and largely untold role in turning back one of the darkest tides in human history.

118/150 A fascinating look at the British and American effort to keep the Nazis from developing nuclear weapons. I've always enjoyed Kean's science books, and while this is mostly history, he does add an ample amount of physics. There is a large cast of characters, but it's easy to keep track of who's who. Like his science books, there are plenty of little know tidbits to keep the trivia minded (me) engrossed in the story. 4 ⭐⭐⭐⭐

A good mix for the weekend. A little history, a little science fiction and a little horror.

This was a really interesting read! Science, especially physics, made digestible and exciting. I liked the line diagrams and the abundance of photos, as well as the wide cast of characters, especially Moe Berg.

Kean's riveting account of the international efforts to sabotage the Nazi nuclear program. Kean explains, & makes accessible, the science behind r & d of the atomic bomb. He also provides a good portrait of the OSS, the freewheeling precursor to the CIA, & the unbelievable heists & espionage that the brigade was involved in. I'm going to just sit here patiently until Netflix/HBO adapts it. Another day, another fantastic #NewYearWhoDis selection!

LauraJ Glad you liked it. One of my favorite books from 2019. 4y

I haven't posted a #weeklyforecast in awhile. I'm currently in the middle of the tagged book. I'm really looking forward to the Atkinson buddy read. I keep hearing great things about Bardugo's novel, I moved it up after @Owlizabeth & @GrilledCheeseSamurai recent glowing praise. I received the gn about Agatha Christie from my cousin for Xmas. Definitely intrigued. A nice, eclectic stack. Just the way I like it.
@Cinfhen

catiewithac I'm curious to know what you think of the Agatha Christie bio!! 4y
vivastory @catiewithac looking forward to it. I know very little about her! 4y
catiewithac @vivastory Her fugue state disappearance should be interesting then! :) Can't wait to read this version of her life myself! 4y

saresmoore I‘m tempted to buy the Bardugo. I started a library 7-day loan, but had to return it. 😔 I liked what I managed to read, though! 4y

I'm loving this one so far. I can't believe I didn't hear about it until I received my #NewYearWhoDis list. It's great narrative nonfiction, along the lines of Erik Larson, featuring a wide cast of memorable individuals.
@LauraJ @monalyisha

LauraJ I was surprised that this didn‘t make it on to any year end “best of” lists. It was one of the rare books that my entire book club loved. All of Kean‘s books are great. 4y
vivastory @LauraJ This is my first Kean. I read the dust jacket & noticed he also wrote to Tales of the Dueling Neurosurgeons. I remember I bought it after hearing him on a Halloween edition of Science Friday a few years ago, & it was such a bizarre story. It's been sitting on my shelves, but I will definitely move it up my TBR because I'm loving Bastard Brigade! 4y

This is Sam Kean‘s best book yet...action, adventure, spies, and science! Kean has a gift for making scientific concepts easy to understand and this story about the crew of characters who stop the nazis from developing THE bomb is fascinating. Most of my book club chose it as their favorite book of 2019 so far!
