Sofronia Wallis knows that proper Black women don't court trouble by upending the status quo, but it's 1961 and the Civil Rights movement is in full swing. Sofie's spent half her life being prim, proper, and reserved-as if that could bring her mother back-but the nonviolent protests happening across the South bring out her inner agitator. Ivan Friedman has devoted his life to boxing, loving the finesse of a well-delivered punch and the penance of receiving one. His family escaped from Europe before the horrors of WWII, and Ivan decides to help fight injustice in their new country, even if it goes against all his instincts as a fighter. When Ivan and Sofie meet, they realize that their pasts are intertwined and-with the sparks that fly between them-perhaps their futures will be too. With everything in their society lined up against them, will Sofie and Ivan be able to beat the odds? Or will their chance at love be destroyed by the tumultuous times they live in?

This is a great historical romance novella. I love that it‘s set during the Civil Rights Movement and focuses on both the relationship between Sof and Ivan and the struggle and pain that activists went through.
Sofie and Ivan played together as children, but when her mother dies they don‘t see each other again until both attend a meeting to train to participate in peaceful protests during the Civil Rights Movement.
It‘s short, but packs a punch.

Alyssa Cole hooked me quick and hard with this historical novella about two childhood friends who reunite during nonviolence training. The romantic component‘s good, but the sheer amount of fortitude Sophie and Ivan display when faced with the task before them is what made this for me. I cried out of fear for them, and I cried because it meant so much to me to see people fight for what‘s right, even at great personal cost. 4.5 stars

I read the first 25% of LET IT SHINE over breakfast, and I‘m SO here for this story about two people who fight for what‘s right even though it‘s terrifying.

I forgot to share my March Must-Reads! The four books I absolutely MUST clear off La TBR this month are:

• Tanya Huff‘s third Quarters book. Someday I‘ll get these back to my mum, from whom I borrowed them mumble years ago

• a KJ Charles novel I saved for February and obviously didn‘t get to. (Should‘ve put it on my February Must-Reads.)

• an Alyssa Cole novella from my digital freebies stash

• a romance chunkster from the abovementioned stash

So, this is definitely something that I WOULD buy, I certainly THOUGHT about buying it, but I could have sworn I didn't actually buy it until I found it on my e-reader. Am I buying books in my sleep? #dontrememberbuyingthis #aprilbookshowers #romantsy

(The anthology itself isn't in the Litsy database so I tagged one of the novellas in the collection.)

DGRachel I totally need to disable "one click" ordering for my Amazon account. 7y

Mehso-so

I liked the premise and characters quite a lot, but I couldn't shake the feeling as I read that (sexy bits aside) this read like a pat YA novel. It hit on all the obvious points and humanized them but seemed really predictable.

I saw this photograph at the Mount Holyoke Art Museum. Immediately, they reminded me of Sofie and Ivan from Alyssa Cole's Let It Shine. Amazing! Art imitating life (presented as art). #romance
