Pride of Eden
Pride of Eden: A Novel | Taylor Brown
14 posts | 9 read | 8 to read
The enthralling new novel from the acclaimed author of Fallen Land, The River of Kings, and Gods of Howl Mountain Vietnam veteran, retired racehorse jockey, and keeper of secrets, Anse Caulfield rescues exotic big cats, elephants, and other creatures for Little Eden, a wildlife sanctuary near the abandoned ruins of a failed development on the Georgia coast. But when Anses prized lion escapes and is killed, he becomes obsessed with replacing hereven if the means of rescue arent exactly legal. Anse is joined by Malaya, a former soldier herself, who after discharge hunted poachers decimating an elephant refuge in Africa; Lope, whose training in falconry taught him to pilot surveillance drones; and Tyler, a veterinarian who has found a place in Anses obsessive world. From an ancient crocodile scarred by forced combat with other animals, a panther caged in a yard, a rare tiger destined to be harvested for its glands, a lion kept as a tourist attraction at a gas station, to a pack of wolves being raised on a remote private island off the coast, Anse and his team battle an underworld of smugglers, gamblers, breeders, trophy hunters, and others who exploit exotic game. The Pride of Eden is a brilliant fever dream of a novel: set on the eroding edge of civilization, rooted in dramatic events that are linked not only with each characters past, but to the prehistory of America, where great creatures roamed the continent and continue to inhabit our collective imagination.

Excellent gritty read full of complex characters. Anse Caufield runs an animal sanctuary for rescued exotic animals. When he loses his prized lioness his grief is overwhelming. With his scarred and complex crew by his side he continues to rescue caged animals and find another lion to save and heal his heart. Triggers for descriptive scenes surrounding violence to animals and war. Tough to read at times. You could tell the author really researched.

Taylor Brown is a gifted author. He crafts unique, fully developed characters and creates beautiful, evocative prose. We all have access to the same words, but he combines them in such a gorgeous way that it‘s difficult to put down his novels. Pride of Eden, out in March, is stunning, and well worth your time. 4 1/2 stars Thanks to #NetGalley and #StMartins

Taylor Brown's words are always a lyrical love letter to the South and he is a master at creating atmosphere.
His latest novel is a stunning look at nature and the relationship between man & beast.

I know we aren‘t supposed to quote from ARCs, but wow. This is why I love Taylor Brown and I really hope this makes the final version.

I really want to read outside in the fresh air, instead of inside with the furnace air, but it‘s much too cold. So, I‘m going to settle for snuggling with #Bailey and reading about the great outdoors. Taylor Brown does an incredible job at describing settings so well that you are transported to those places. His writing is just gorgeous.

ljuliel I‘m with you. Can‘t wait til it‘s warm enough to sit outside to read. I don‘t know why, but I always pictured Taylor Brown as being a female ! I‘m not sure why I thought it.... maybe because one of my cousins had a girl they named Taylor. 5y
DGRachel @ljuliel I met him at a book signing two years ago, on his book tour for Gods of Howl Mountain the night before I had to put Pilot to sleep (sorry, the grief is strong today). He‘s a really nice guy. I bought his backlist that night, too, and he signed all of them for me. 5y
ljuliel Since I read mostly ebooks and audio, I often don‘t see a picture of the author .It sounds like he was very nice. I need to read something of his. I‘m very sorry about your pet ( dog or cat )?That‘s probably one of the reasons I don‘t have pets. The part where you lose them would be one of the hardest things. I guess you can at least know that you gave them the best life possible while they were with you and hopefully had many good years together 5y

Pride of Eden is rich, dark, and atmospheric. It is a southern novel whose nature loving outlaws are reminiscent of those in Edward Abbey‘s classic environmentalist adventure tales of the southwest. Brown‘s skill and sophistications seems to grow by leaps and bounds with each new novel. This Southern novelist‘s career is just taking off and I am here for it!

Adventurous, realistic, heartbreaking, gripping.

This engrossing novel sustained my attention with every heart pounding word, making me think about it long after I set the novel down. The Pride of Eden made me think about life, the connections we make, the narrative in this novel will stay with me forever. Beautifully written, descriptive, poetically enthralling with passion for animals, it's superb.

😱Hell yes! I haven't been this excited by an invitation to read an ARC since Ausma Zehanat Khan's publisher reached out to me earlier this year. I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED Brown's novel, Gods of Howl Mountain, and I cannot wait to sink my teeth into this one. 😍
