Second-Worst Restaurant in France: A Paul Stuart Novel (2)
Second-Worst Restaurant in France: A Paul Stuart Novel (2) | Alexander McCall Smith
8 posts | 9 read | 6 to read
In this delightful sequel to the best-selling comedic novel My Italian Bulldozer, Paul Stuart's travels take him to a French village, where the local restaurant's haute cuisine leaves a lot to be desired. Renowned Scottish cookbook writer Paul Stuart is hard at work on his new book, The Philosophy of Food, but complicated domestic circumstances, and two clingy cats, are making that difficult. So when Paul's eccentric cousin Chloe suggests that he join her at the house she's rented in the French countryside, he jumps at the chance. The two quickly befriend the locals, including their twin-sister landladies, who also own the infamous local restaurant known to be the second-worst eatery in all of France. During their stay, the restaurant's sole waitress gives birth mid-dinner service and the matre d' storms off after fighting with the head chef. Paul is soon drafted to improve the gastronomy of the village, while Chloe, ever on the hunt for her next romance, busies herself with distracting the handsome but incompetent chef. Could he be husband number six? With all this local drama to deal with, Paul finds it next to impossible to focus on his writing, and that's before he learns that Chloe's past is far more complicated than he'd ever imagined. Paul will have to call upon al his experience--with food and with people--to bring order back to the village. And he may just learn something about family--and about himself--along the way.

I‘m in the midst of a massive declutter campaign- it‘s taking a long time - it‘s hard to say goodbye to some “things” : I‘ve been listening to audiobooks- I wanted books that were quite light but not too engaging. Pleasant characters with not too much going on -to start the process. These books met the requirements: low picks - I wouldn‘t re-listen to them. 🐉💚

Aimeesue Those are exactly the kinds of books I pick to do chores by. Mine are usually "audiobooks for dog walking" ? Well put. 2y
Dragon Thanks @Aimeesue glad to find out about “audiobooks for dog walking” -definitely Googling a list 😄💚🐉 2y

As ever with this author, this book was a gentle, charming read.

Paul and his cousin Chloe are staying in a rural French village with the unlikely distinction of being the home of the second worst restaurant in France. Can Paul become a culinary hero? Can such simple things be considered heroic?

Alexander McCall Smith always paints kindness as a heroic endeavour.

TrishB That‘s such a nice way of putting it. 3y
Libby1 Thanks, @TrishB . He always writes about kindness, and this makes me happy. I hope you‘re well. ❤️ 3y

This book is a treat! Paul is a food writer who needs a quiet place to write. His older cousin Chloe offers him the opportunity to share a house with him in a small village in France. The food really is that bad! Paul and Chloe gradually become involved in the drama unfolding in the villagers lives. Hearing Paul‘s POV is sometimes laugh out loud funny. Like all of this author‘s books, we grow to love every character and can imagine the village

Haven‘t read one of his books for a long while. I went from enjoying his books to finding them a little bit tedious. This one was enjoyable, light and as usual with his books peppered with little facts and philosophies.
Now on to an Aussie book for this Aussie day Readathon. @ReadingDownUnder #AuDayReadathon
