Just after lunch on a Tuesday in April, nine feet under water, police diver Flea Marleyhaunted by the recent mysterious death of her parentscloses her gloved fingers around a human hand. The fact that theres no body attached is disturbing enough. Yet more disturbing is the discovery, a day later, of the matching hand. Both have been recently amputated, and the indications are that the victim was still alive when they were removed. Leading the case is DI Jack Caffery, relocated from London to Bristol in an effort to distance himself from the memories of his brothers childhood kidnapping and murder. Unable to shake his personal demons, Caffery throws himself into his work, following a trail that seems to lead toward black-magic rituals and a string of missing drug addicts. Flea Marley pursues the case as well, turning to an old family friend who is well-versed in witchcraft and ritual. She suspects he knows more than hell admit, including information about her fathers own links to forms of witchcraft. It isnt until their suspicions force Caffery and Flea to work together that things start to click into terrifying place, and they find themselves confronting not only a sadistic killer but the ghosts of their own pasts.

“Hayder . . . moves to another level in this spellbinder. With characters so complex, so fascinating that they could populate a dozen novels, she sends readers into a demimonde of ritual magic, desperation, guilt, and death, all exquisitely composed. . . . Ritual is brilliant, dense, scary; definitely one of the best crime novels of [the year].”—The Globe and Mail

BookDragonNotWorm I love her books! They're so twisted! 3y
deeannloso @BookDragon Me too! I am reading (listening) to her books while waiting for the new Chris Carter book to come out in August. His books are really twisted. 3y
parker_pa1 Hello dear how are you doing today? 2y
deeannloso I‘m doing well, thank you. 2y

This was somewhere between so-so and pick. Like the others in the series there was a lot of detail early on but more sub-plots, too many in my opinion. Others have really picked up in the second half of the book, but this one didn‘t do so to the same extent. The hardest thing to bear was that there were so many changes for Jack from the previous one, and four years had elapsed. I thought I‘d missed a book in the series, but sadly not. 👇

Andrew65 I feel the author took a few too many liberties with the reader in this one with all the changes. It just didn‘t feel like the same series as a result. Hopefully the next one will get back to the overall standard of the first two. 🤞 (edited) 6y
julesG Right, it felt like Hayder was working on a new series and then noticed it might sell better with Jack in it. It's been ages since I read it, but Jack felt like edited into the plot. Probably the reason why I stopped reading the series although I got the next books. 6y
Andrew65 @julesG Definitely felt very different and with Jack as co-star rather than star. Strange decision. If she wanted to do this there should have been a book in between to show what went wrong with his relationship. 6y

EadieB @Andrew65 Nice review! Same way I felt about this book! 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Thanks, I felt we had similar viewpoints on it. I‘m convinced a book should be written between the second and third one. I think it‘s even more stark having only read the second one last week! 🤞for book 4. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 I think you‘re right! All of a sudden he was in Bristol and nothing about the relationship he was in ending. 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB There wasn‘t even that much said about the relationship. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 That was very poor on her part. 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Agreed. 6y

Bristol, UK. Not as good as Bk 1 and 2. Boring in parts. Too many sub-plots. I will continue the series, however. Sgt. Flea Marley finds a human hand while diving. She teams up with Jack Caffery. Both Marley and Caffery are flawed as Marley lost her parents to a dive and Caffery is still mourning his brother, Ewen. The Walking Man is introduced. I would recommend to those who love gritty thrillers. Not for the faint of heart.

Andrew65 Finished before me. Overall agree with your review. Too many bits that have to struggle through. 6y
julesG Agree to your review. 6y

Starting Ritual, Book 3 in the Jack Caffery series, which I am reading with @Tove_Reads and @EadieB
#MoHayderBuddyRead #JackCafferyBuddyRead

EadieB @Andrew65 @Tove_reads I started this yesterday. 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB What a change in his life in this one, compared to the last book. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 Yes, now that he‘s in Bristol working with Flea. Hayder seems to have new characters in each book. @Tove_Reads 6y

Andrew65 @EadieB Shame we have lost some of the other characters. @Tove_Reads 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 I agree! I think I like book 1 and 2 better. This one is somewhat different because it has more subplots. @Tove_Reads 6y
julesG Please don't forget to alert me around book 5,so I can join you. Pretty please. 😊 6y
julesG PS: It took me a moment to realize that this book was more about Flea than Jack. Somehow. 6y
Andrew65 @julesG We will. 👍😊 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB So far this one is less gritty. It feels strange compared to the others. @julesG Most definitely so far feels more about Flea. @Tove_Reads 6y
Tove_Reads I thought it wasn‘t as good as the others because I read it in Swedish. Somehow crime translated in to the Swedish can be blah. But, yeah, feels like another author took over. @EadieB 6y
EadieB @Tove_Reads Hopefully the next one will be better. @Andrew65 6y
Andrew65 Where are either of you up to. I‘m up to chapter 23. @EadieB @Tove_Reads (edited) 6y
Tove_Reads Chapter 21. Will have to do some work now, so won‘t read until tomorrow morning. 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB I‘m still hoping his one will get better. 6y
Andrew65 Just checked this one has the lowest rating in the series. @Tove_Reads @EadieB 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 Well at least they do get better than this one! @Tove_Reads 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Now over halfway, Chapter 31. Not much in this book about a murder (or not) investigation. 🤔 @Tove_Reads 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 I like it better when the author does 1 major plot or investigation instead of all these subplots. This book is boring in parts! @Tove_Reads 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Certainly Agree, tough to read continuously! 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 I did audio plus book. Easier to get thru boring parts. @Tove_Reads 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Audio is always better for that! With a book like this you keep thinking do I rest from it and start a new book, or try to plough on so I get finished quicker. (edited) 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 I would just plow thru and be done with it. Otherwise it will keep haunting you. @Tove_Reads 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB 😂 So true! It‘s not a series I‘ve fallen in love with! @Tove_Reads (edited) 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 It is pretty gritty with some nasty themes and characters! @Tove_Reads 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB I just find them to have not much of a flow, wanting me to keep reading on. I felt this with the last one too, and a bit fed up with all the Ewan story. It seems to dominate the books more than the murders / abductions etc. @Tove_Reads 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 I like the Jane Casey and Adrian McKinty books better. Maybe we should put this series on hold after this one. @Tove_Reads 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB The Adrian McKinty and Jane Casey books are definitely more enjoyable reads. @Tove_Reads 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 We can either try one more as a group or read them on our own. @Tove_Reads 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB We‘ll see what @Tove_Reads thinks. There are 4 more in the series, and she hasn‘t written anything since 2014. 6y
Andrew65 Book 5 was an Edgar Award Winner. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 Just read the description for the next book entitled Skin and it says: Devious and disturbing, it introduces one of Hayder's most horrifying villains yet. Sounds gritty and nasty to me. But, we can see what Tove_Reads thinks. (edited) 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 Book 5 doesn‘t sound too bad. @Tove_Reads 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Book 4 sounds 😢😱😂 (edited) 6y
Tove_Reads @Andrew65 @EadieB Just Finished. It was a bit weird. Should we read the next one and make a decision after that one? It‘s quite common that one book in the series doesn‘t live up to the others. Remember Heartstone? 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads That was quick!!! Last night you were only on Chapter 21. I‘m on Chapter 38 (65%) and aiming to finish this afternoon. I imagine I‘ll finish the series, either individually or with both of you, even if don‘t improve. Hate to give up on a series in the middle. @EadieB (edited) 6y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 I will finish the series as well. I doubt we will run out of series, since we haven‘t even started three we have recently discussed. 6y
Tove_Reads @Andrew65 ... and we have the second option we voted for, but chose the three we are reading now. 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads And that‘s just the tip of the iceberg! 😱 @EadieB Now on Chapter 50 (last 100 Pages). 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Remind me of the second option? 6y
Tove_Reads Hmm... don‘t remember all of them. I think David Hewson was one of them. Need to check the lists each of us made. 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Yes not read any David Henson yet. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 I don‘t mind finishing Mo Hayder books since I own a few more. @Tove_Reads 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB We‘re almost half way through. This book like her others tedious in first half but gets better towards the end. Needs to write shorter books I think. @Tove_Reads (edited) 6y

I've been on this British crime thriller jag for weeks, finding Bolton's Lacey Flint and Hayder's Jack Caffrey series addictive escapes, like potato chips, fed by the ability to download them from the library's Overdrive site. Discovered yesterday that OD only offers the first 2 Hayder books in Kindle and the Bolton books all have a waiting list. Since I left my book club book at work before my long weekend, I broke down and bought this one.
